HIS FRANCHISE TO EASTERN CAPITALISTS AND WILL NOT THE STORY PRINTED Was Only a Rumor Without a Word of Truth Mikels Talks. The Palladium on Friday published an article 4hai diS an injustice to Mr. Michael Gleason of this city. The article referred to stated that Mr. Gleason had sold his franchise to etistern people which is vary unlike Mr. Gleason. Concerning the Richmond line Mr. C. N. Mikels made the following statement to the New Castle Courier: The right of way is being taken along the south side of the Panhandle hy local parties to lay before a group of capitalists, to Avhorn the proposition to run along the Ilagerstown pike has been presented and whnm wag turned down by them as not tlu proper' place for such a line. The capitalists expressed enough interest in an effort to go along the south side of the Panhandle railroad to jmstify the effort to get liis new right of way. So far no money has been found which would consider the pike lino but these people have expressed an interest in the other right of way. Their statement being to find out whether asuffieient right of way could be obtained at a sufficiently reasonable price and present the matter for their consideration. They were sufficiently interested to give it consideration. The franchise alluded to ii the Palladium was one at Winchester to the Indianapolis, Newcastle and Wi nch est er eompa ny. ''This proposition has to go through the same process as all attempts at roads until it is whipped into satisfactory shape to satisfy the poop'.e who loan the money to build the road. It is not Mr. Michael T. Gleason to sav that he has not sold his fran chise to eastern people so far as we know." Mr. Gleason is a resident of this i city and says the story was made out j of whole cloth. He has sold nothing, neither will he sell. NORTH END MISSION. Last evening the North End Mission held a very impressive song service which consisted of a large number of the old, old songs that our parents and grandparents used to sing when they were young. The general singing was interspersed with songs by the children and quartet, also a solo, "The Handwriting on the Wall," Avhich was very fine, by Mr. Elmer Hail, from Orange, near Boston, Indiana. Music was furnished by Miss Viola Dalbey, pianist, and Mr William Thomas, violinist. After the singing Rev. Theodore Candler gave a short history of some of the sonus and their writers which was very instructive. Your Stomach. When the quantity of food taken is too large or the quality too rich, sour stomach is likely to follow and especially so if the digestion has been weakened by constipation. Eat slowly and not too freely of easily digested food. Masticate the food thoroughly. Let five hours elapse between meals, and when you feel a fullness and a weight in the region of the stomach after eating, take Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets and the sour stomach may be avoided. PEACE IN URUGUAY
Revolution at an End, but Financial Outlcck Is Gloomy. Buenos Ay res. Set??. 2". Confirmation has been receive:! here of the report of the conclusion of peace between the rr::c;'i?.y2ii covornment and the revolutionists under Gen. Munoz. In explanation cf th? government forces surprising the insurgent camp it appears that notification of the recent rupture of p?ace negotiations was communicated to Fernandez, a revolutionary pol;t-cal leader, but not to those under arms: and up to the moment of the unexpected attack by the government, forces the commanders of the rebels had not been informed that a rupture of negotiations had taken place. The fact becoming known that the revolutionists were not actively hostile led to the resumption of conferences, with the reeult that terms of peace were agreed upon. There is general rejoicing here and in Uruguay over the outcome. It is expected that claims will be presented by diplomatic representatives of foreign governments for damages and losses to foreign residents to the amount of several million dollars, and the financial outlook is consequently gloomy. BUSY VESUVIUS Historic Old Volcano Making a Brilliant Display. Naples, Sept. 2C. The eruption of Mount Vesuvius continues to increase in force and is now more violent than at any time since 1872. Red-hot stones are hurled to a height of 1,000 feet, falling down the flanks of the mountain with a deafening sound. The director of the observatory says that between 5 o'clock Sunday morning and 6 o'clock in the afternoon his instruments registered 1,844 violent explosions and that one stone thrown out weighed about two tons. Lava flowing from the crater has melted the metal of the Funicular railway, destroyed the upper station and burned the wooden huts in which guides live. All vegetation within a radius of one mile of the crater has disappeared. Several earthquake shocks were felt Sunday, borne of the people in the surrounding villages have left their homes and are camped in the open air. The curiosity of tourists to approach the volcano is such that a large number of guards have been detailed to prevent them crossing the prescribed limits. The Court Took a Hand. Fairmont. YV. Va.. Sept. 21. Judge John Jay Jackson of the United States ocurt at rarkersburg issued an injunction Sunday restraining the city of Fairmont from interfering with a concert by an Eastern orchestra at the opera house last night. United States Marshal Elliott arrived at 8 o'clock with the injunction. The doors were then opened and 1,000 people clamored for admission. The street in front of the opera house was packed solid with men and women who stood for more than an hour waiting for the doors to open. There was loud cheering when the announcement was made that the show would go on. The churches were practically deserted last night and hundreds of church members were the first to enter the theater. The mayor, at the Instance of the ministers of the town, had issued an order against the Sunday concert Fight on Miners' Federation. Lsadville, Col.. Sept. 2G. The LeadWe District Mining association, which takes in every mine manager in the district, has decided to issue working cards for the purpose of carrying on the fight against the Western Federation of Miners Notices were posted at every mine in the camp today to the effec that no person will be employed who shall not have deposited with the timekeeper his card of recommendation from the mining association. Every applicant will be required to sign a statement that he is not a member of the federation or any order controlled by it. Militia No Longer Needed. Huntsville, Ala., Sept. 2G. On advice of Judge Speake of the circuit court, orders were received Sunday for the militia to break camp around the Madison county jail and return to Birmingham. The guard at the jail was taken off at noon and the company left for Rome last night. It is etxremely improbable there will be any more trouble during the trials of alleged lynchers. Senator Hoar Sinking. Worcester, Mass., Sept. 26. The family of Senator George F. Hoar, who has been dangerously ill for several weeks, last night issued a bulletin showing that the senator is gradually succumbing to the effects of his long illness. Only the immediate members of the senator's family are admitted to The sick chamber, and he spends most of his time asleep. Will Get Taste of War. Tokio.
