Indianapolis, Ind., Sept. 1G.
Without a doubt, the Indiana State Fair, which is being held here this
week, is the largest, and most expen
sive State Fair ever sriven in Ind. In
every thing it far surpasses all forIt 1 1 . mm
mer lairs neid at tins city. the space
for exhibitors is greatly enlarged,
and the number of exhibits is in
creased from last year by a large per cent. The grounds are in the
visited. The Hoosier Drills, which
! have -wider reputation than those of
the. Wayne Works, are objects of interest to many farmers. The stand
ard makes the Hoosier drills, of all sorts and sizes, are displayed. The
Hoosier machines have had man'
minor improvements added in late
years, and tnese improvements are
dwelt upon. w
The Davis Carriage eompanv (last
year the Davis and Taylor Carriage
Company) has a tent facing the south
near te racetracks.
The rigs of this company have at-
tained great popularity of late, owing
to thorough goodness of manuufac
tHre, and strong advertising This
tent received a large number of call
ers each day. The rigs of the Davis carriage company are similar to those
I of the Westcott Carriage company.
Richmond is well represented in
the exhibits of fruits, fancy- work,
and the like, and Wayne County has many exhibits in the lines of cows,
pigs, sheep, poultry, etc.
The large proportion of the Rich
mond exhibits have been sold, and
will be removed on Monday.

year, and they make quite an attrac
tive spectacle from a distance
"The weatherman will get a vote of thanks from the Fair management," said President Downing today to the Palladium correspondent,
"the weather could not have been
excelled. A pleasing thing is the cool
ness of the air, as contrasted to the heat of several days last year. The weather has been ideal for the fair, and the gate receipts are the barome
ter that proves this."
Richmond residents, about two hundred of whom have visited the
fair up to date, seem to think that
their citv has not its full share of
exhibits here, considering the splurge made bv manufactories in very much smaller towns. Richmond is repre
sented by four firms, two of which
manufacture drills, planters andagri-
cultural implements, and the other
two make carriages, surreys, phae tons, and light driving vehicles.
As the lair is especially given in
the interest of and for' the benefit of
the farmer, it is but natural that the
exhibits should be such as will inter
est the farmer, as he is the one who derives most of the benefit from the
fair. So in the main, tfle exhibits are those which appeal to the farmery
mostlv.
The YVavne Works and the Hoosier
Division, A. M. S. M. Co., are the two
exhibitors of' agricultural implements,
and the Westcott Carriage Company
and the G. W. Davis Carriage Com
pany, of the lighter and finer vehicles. The exhibits of the four firms are in charge of salesmen from the head offices, with travelling salesman in attendance. Next to the Administration building, on the same lot that it has occupied for five or six years, is the Wayne Works exhibit forty pieces, representing nearly everything manufactured by this firm, are in the tent. Probably the objects of greater interest are the new, small, one horse, five-disc drills, new machines and
ones that in a few years have shown
and W. H. Sudhoff, Fifth and Main streets.

toothless variety, every one of which
seemed to do well in the immense
tank constructed for their home.
"The plan of his father I think

the experiment was made. It worked

Wayne Works has a very fine location. The Westcott Carriage company has a rather small tent near the erandstand. The fine beautifully
shaped rigs, are shown in an excellent way, convincing and attractive to the prospective buyer. This firm received Word a few days ago that a large money prize had been awarded it at the St, Louis Fair for the best carriage poster. The Westcott 's device is a familiar one, very artistic, and done in handsome color work. The rigs of the Westcott Carriage Company are I
among the finest, both from an artistic and a comfort standpoint, on the
grounds. The Hoosier Drill is the only Richmond exhibit in a building, it occupying half of a section in the central row of wooden structures. The large number of drills, planters, and other implements are shown and are "talked up" by a number of salesmen. The Hoosier Exhibit is much
pass, form and dissolve, like a. well trained squad of sildiers. The scene was magnificent. At one moment you saw, from the high balcony on which we were seated, a five-jointed star, outlined by columns of water that rose and fell back in silver spray. The next moment it was a circle, then a square, then they all formed with their noses together in the center and sent up a combined column of water to an immense height, thus forming 1 ft
a circle or spray. 1 never say anything so beautiful in my life, and
never expect to see it again. Beg
pardon? Why, yes, I know that as a scientific fact the appearance of a
spouted column of water when a whale blows is illusory and really
due to the condensation of the moist
breath expelled from the animal's lungs. That's just where the re
markable part of it comes in. The whales were taught to remain during the fountain act with their heads al
most submerged, so that they could
keep their mouths full of water. The water so taken in they were further trained to expel through the nostril, Avhieh is near the vortex of the head, just as a boy learns to blow smoke through his nose."
