inn DARE DEVIL MEN DO PECULIAR THINGS FOR LIVELIHOOD DANGEROUS FEATS At the Jubilee Next Week Are in the Wild Animal Show Story of the "McKinley" Lion. It is a singular truth, but a fact nevertheless, that the public like to see human lives placed in jeopardy for its entertainment. That, in no way, explains the hungry interest, which all visitors to the carnival display in the looping of the death trap loop of Divolo and also tells the story of strange fascination which controls, the crowds when Arthur Holden deliberately risks his life in making his wonderful high dive at each performance in the carnival hippodrome show. But dangerous as are both of these feats, the "fight for life" in the wild animal show is by far more daring. In this act, Major Crawford, fights his way into the cage of "McKinley" the largest and most ferocious natured lion in captivity and some night he will go once too often into the enraged presence of that king of beasts. A good many people imagine that "McKinley" has been, trained to put up the fight which characterizes his part of the feat performed by Major Crawford but this is an erroneous impression. "McKinley" is purely and simply a "bad lion." He has killed not only his man, but several of them daring his caged career and no one knows how many before he was captured in the jungles by Colonel Mundy and a corps of natives, after one of the longest aud fiercest fights recorded in( the business of wild beast hunting. The many other beasts in the wild animal show at the carnival are also each liable to display their respective innate natures at any moment during their performances for as Colonel Mundy said in Dayton last July," you can never tell what to expect from an animal whose first instinct has ever been and will always continue to be the killing of human beings." "For five years "McKinley" was a model animal, and then the inevitable change came. He seemed to lose interest. He became slow to obey and sulked. A sulking lion who threatens to turn adds spectacularly to the interest of a performance and always within limits, a trainer prizes an animal of this kind. "McKinley" passed the limit one afternoon while performing in the big stage cage. He got his cue but never budged and, when the trainer's long whalebone whip flicked him lightly, back went the ears, the mouth opened, the Hps drew back showing long, yellow teeth, and, as his tail switched, the beast couched for a spring. It was high time to have it out on the spot. With a whip in one hand the trainer cut the fine fellow right and left, and it seemed as if the lion were cowed when quick as lightning, he turned with an angry snarl, let out a vicious blood-curdling cry, and shot through the air. "Down went the man, the lion's claws fastened in a shoulder, splintering the blade. "When a lion attacks a man, generally he ti-ies to get all over him at once, but, strangely, this beast kept his hold like a bull dog, dragged the yelling prey to a corner of the huge cage, and made ready for defense. From all sides ran trainers and keepers with whips and clubs and bars and pitch forks, to fight the blood-mad brute; but ittwas not until the muzzle of a six-shooter was thrust against his face and a singing blank cart ridge emptied that he let go his hold to wander into an exhibiting cage, where he is now and in which he will finish his days." It is said that the Mundy trained wild animal show has only one rival or competitor in this country and that is now at the St. Louis Fair. It will assuredly be a great feature at the Jalir Market next week. Better Than a Plaster. Japanese Buying Steel Plate In America. Acccording to a Pittsburg dispatch the Japanese government has given the Carnegie Steel companv an order for 7,500 tons of the finest nickel steel plates for use on battleships. The price to be paid is not stated, but it must be at least $200 a ton. So the war has given the steel company business to the amount of $1,500,000. It is perfectly proper for the company to fill the order. There is no violation of neutrality therein. If the Russian government will place an order the impartial company will gladly fill that also. If the plates when on their way to Japan across the Pacfie should be captured by a Russian cruiser there would be no question as to their liability to seizure as contraband of war. But unless the two cruisers of the Russian volunteer fleet which left the Red Sea several weeks ago and went eastward, should turn up in the Pacific there is no doubt but what the Japanese government will get its plates. Nobody knows what is going on in Japanese navy yards. The order given the American steel company indicates that in all probability feverish activity prevails in them. No matter how good care the Japanese have taken of their navy, the wear and tear of the last seven months of constant, arduous service must have told on it. It will need reinforcing, and the Japs are doing all they can to that end in their own navy yards. Their facilities for turning out nickel steel plates are limited and they are obliged in this emergency to go to American mills. Evidently the Japanese mean to be in readiness for the advent of the Baltic fleet. $100 Reward, $100.
