Pennsylvania System Will Look to Life of Engines. On the Pennsyhania line a movement is 011 foot to go back to the old method of handling trains and it is thought iossible that the Pennsylyania will lead in the matter. The old idea was that if one man run an engine it would have more time in the round house and would always go out on the road in good shape. If .anything had t he done it could be done while the engineer Avas resting, but for the last decade the engine and engineer have been divorced. The policy f the railroads led to the having of only just barely enough engines to do the work. The result ws th-at if something got wrong with an engine it was kept going until it was completely disabled and tlie small ills not being remedied soon grew into larger ones. In fact, the engine soon became old, . and without constant care its life Avas soon gone. The question now is whether the change that is now to be made by prolonging the life of the engine will offset the money tied up in. .other engines, and the Pennsylvania proposes to find out. the correctness of this theory. Had By Hunter Who Was Held Prisoner By a Bear Trap. (San Bernardino Cor. San Francisco Chronicle.) Hiram Lake, a homesteader, living in the Fish Springs region, Avas held a prisoner for two days in a bear trap Avhieh he encountered while hunting. That section in the past has been noted as being a favorite place for bears, and as a result traps are quite frequently found. Lake Avas pressing his way. through the brush when he felt something grip his leg, and an excruciating pain shot through his body as the rusty teeth of the trap cut through his boots and sank into the flesh.' He fired aAvay all Ins ammunition vainly trying to attract attention, and then used his lungs, calling for help until increasing pain and exhaustion overcame him and he sank insensible. When he revived another day Avas breaking. He threw all his Aveight up on the trap, but owing to the manner in which he was imprisoned and the pain which every motion caused he was unable to release himself and would have undoubtedly perished had not assistance come in the person of a trapper named George Young. Young found Lake in a delirious condition, his leg being SAVOolen al most double its normal size, and he was tugging with his teeth at the steel trap. It Avas necessary to throAV him down and bind his arms behind him before he could be released. For two days he Avas cared for by Young, who then started with him for Bakersfield, fearing that unless he received expert attention blood poisoning would set in where the sharp teeth of the trap had lacerated the flesh. When troubled Avith constipation try Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets. They are easy to take and produce no griping or other unpleasnt effect. For sale by A. G. Luken & Co., W. II. B;adstreefs Agents Find Things In Encouraging Condition. Sew York, Sept. 10. Bradstreet's weekly review of tr-de today says: Trade, crop and Industrial developments have been generally favorable this week. Distribution on fall and winter trade account has enlarged at most markets, the corn crop has progressed another week toward final maturity, which this year is later than usual, and several industries hitherto greatly depressed or operating on short time, have resumed running full. The industrial situation is slightly less strained than it was and the beef strike is now ended. In iron and steel past and prospective price reductions have encouraged inquiry, consumption has finally overtaken production, and stocks of crude material are smaller. With the beginning of the crop movement, which is reasonably heavy for this period, has come improved collections and better railway earnings returns.
