Chicago, Sept. 10. One in every
three school children in Chicago, it is
estimated, is a victim of some form of nervousness, mild or aggravated. This is the finding of public school pedagogues after observations extending more than a year. The prevalence of nervous disorders among children is attributed to the following causes: The strenuous city life. The impure city atmosphere. The bringing, up of children in flat buildings. No relief from noise, day or night. Lack of proper nutrition. Late hours permitted by parents. Residence along cable and trolley car lines. The finding is based on statistics collected in every part of the city. Of the 300 pupils examined by the child study department of the school board during the last year a large majority of the defectives were found to be sufferers from diseases of the nerves According to C. C. Krauskopf, assistant supervisor of the child study department, the nervous affections usually took one of two forms :
Sluggishness and mental depression, with tendencies toward melancholia. Cholera, or uncontrollable nervous twitchings. 'Dr. Krauskopf attributed to malnutrition the condition of many of the children brought to the attention of the department. "In a great many of the cases nervousness was directly traceable to lack of the proper food, accompanied by poor air to breathe, life in flat buildings, noise day and night the natural results of city life," he said, "Nervousness is a natural result of life in the city." Supt. Cooler declared that it has become a recognized fact that everything possible must be done in the public schools to counteract the nervous effect of city life. "To exercise too great devotion to
the school books provokes nervousness," he said, "an dmanual activity in schools will tend to lessen the danger. "We have introduced manual training and the correlated branches of studv into the schols for the pur
pose of decreasing the prevalent nervousness. The city life has much to do with the nervousness of the school children the rattle of the elevated trains, the noise of the cable cars and trolleys, and the congested conditions of certain sections of the city." A public school principal who has made a careful investigation of the subject and intends to publish a pamphlet showing the effeet of city life on the child, declared that the parents
have no conception of the "appalling
increase" or nervous complaints among children. He blamed the parents for permitting their children to keep late hours
and go into "society," to attend
dances and theatres while they are. still in their 'teens. The public schools also were held to blame for a measure
of the evil.
"The children in many instances are obliged to sit in desk chairs,
hi Mi do not suit them." he said.
JEWISH NEW TEAR
Was Celebrated All Over the World Today. The Jewish religious Xew Year, began today. This occasion is always celebrated in prayer and religious services. The observance of the day is begun at sundown of the previous day and continues until sundown. In orthodox circles New Year's Eve has special features that have been observed at the table for centuries. Sweet things are eaten as an expres-
sion or a wisn ior a sweet year. The Jewish New Year practically extends for ten days, when the Day of Atonement occurs.
Yesterday was a feast day, and
from sunset of the day previous for
a twenty-four hours strict Jews do not
eat a morsel of food or allow drink
of any kind to pass their lips.
The holiday is known as "Rosh
Hashonoh," Again, as in the an
cient times in the temple of Jerusalem
the trumpet known as the shofer made
of the horn of the ram, will be blown
in all the orthodox places of worship.
This is replaced by the modern cor net in reform temples.
Various notes are uttered on this
musical instrument, in exact counter
part of the notes heard by the Irael-
ltes in the temple thousands of years
ago.
lhe holiday is observed in many particulars like the first day of the
year in the Christian calendar, by the
sending of cards and greetings
" Yora Kippur," the Day of Atonement, follows ten days later. Orothodox Jews fast twenty-four hours and
remain in their synagogues constantly
the day and
during
night.

West Baden, Ind., September 10.
Borrowed water is being dished out
o sojourners at French Lick springs. The far-famed Pluto spring has
ceased, at least temporardy, to give forth its health-dealing water.
In the meantime there is a hurry1 n 1 1 1 ? i

National Democratic Chairman Tag-
gart, who is president of the company
that owns the spring and Crawford
Fairbanks, who looks after Mr. Taggart's interests, has been sent for.
The Pluto well quit flowing a short
time after Dr. John L. Howard start
ed a steam pump in a mineral water well at his summer resort about a mile from French Lick Springs.
Some months ago Dr. Howard bored a well and started to pump it, but, when it was noticed that it affected
the Big Pluto spring, injunction pro
ceedings were instituted in an effort
to prevent him from continuing the pumping.
The court found that the physician was entitled to pump water sufficient for his use, but that he would not be allowed to waste it. Dr. Howard started his pump yesterday morning and after it had been going five hours the Pluto spring went dry. Upon learning this Dr. Howard stopped pumping at once. Representatives of the French Lick Springs company called upon Dr. Howard and held a conference with him and sent for Crawford Fairbanks. The guests at French Lick Springs are using water from West Baden.
