'RAH FOR FARMER!

Tliat Is What Mr. Babcock Said When He Heard fc From Vermont. VOTING5 HIS APPROVAL It Is Kvident From These Indications That the Farmers ViH Sustain Administration. Jio Doubt In His Mind That Thej "Will Do Kverywhere As They Did In Vermont. New York, Sept. 8. Although mem bers of the Republican national com mittee would not comment on the Verrtent election, other Republicans who visited headquarters were not so reticent. Representative Babcock, chairman of the Republican congressional committee, said: "Hurrah for the farmer! He is the fellow that made that big vote in VerHEPRESENTATIVE JOSEPH W. BABCOCK. mont. Ever since the campaign start ed I have been hearing doubting Thomases in our own party wondering whether In view of the abundant crops everywhere and the general satisfactory condition of affairs, the farmer could be sufficiently interested in the coming election to get out and vote. I am delighted to see the vote in Vermont, because it shows that the farmer is willing to vote his approval of existing conditions. There is no doubt In my mind that the farmers everywhere are going to do just what the farmers in Vermont have done." TAGGART TALKS Democratic Chairman Attempts an Explanation. New York, Sept. 8. The following statement concerning the result in Vermont . was issued by Chairman Thomas Taggart of the Democratic national committee last night and was WILLIAM F. 8HKEHAN. concurred in by William F. Sheehan, chairman of the executive committee, and Delancey Nicoll, vice chairman: "The result in Vermont is not surprising in view of the unparalleled efforts made by the Republicans and the quiet campaign conducted by the Democrats. The administration concentrated all its forces and resources upon that state, holding in the last week 200 meetings. The candidate for vice president, the secretary of war, the speaker of the house of representatives, senators of the United States and representatives in congress, assisted by a nost of lesser lights, made urgent appeals to the Republican farmers to go to the polls. "In view of these efforts, never made before by any party In a September election, it Is remarkable that the administration did not succeed in increasing the Republican majority. Indeed, it did not even increase the Republican vote." Indicted on Five Counts. Des Moines, la., Sept. 8. Ray Dunning, president of the ref unct Citizens bank at Mount Arr, la., has been indicted for fraudulent banking on five different counts. The failure of his bank last spring was sensational, Involving about $200,000 loss, and seriously crippled Mount Arr business interests. Dunning was one of the highest esteemed citizens of southern Iowa. Fire Starts at Headquarters. Bakefsfiela Cal., Sept. 8. Fire broke out in the engino house of the local fire department yesterday afternoon and destroyed two blocks in the central part of the city. A Chinaman named Ah Gong was suffocated. Loss probably $100,000.
