SERGEANT
IS UNKNOWN MAN ATTACKS INDIANAPOLIS OFFICER FATALLY INJURED Assailant Refused to Give Name or Any Information and There is No Clew. Indianapolis, Tnd., September 3. An unknown man attacked Serjeant Green Hagerman with a knife on West Washington street at about 7:30 o'clock last night and cut and stabbed the brave police officer four times. The assailant, who refused to give his name or any information concerning himself, was shot in the left side under the heart,, as ke was about to make his escape, by the wounded officer, and is probably fatally injured The knife-user is not known to any of the detectives or officers working on the case, and he will probably die without telling who he is, or revealing his motive for the act. His clothing was searched by detectives, but they found nothing which would give them a clew that might lead to his identity. Sergeant Hagerman says he never saw the man before and can assign no motive for the unprovoked assault. At the hospital the wounded man told one of the physicians that Hageraian had arrested him at one time, but the officer does not remember this. It was suggested that probably the fellow is a maniac, but this is denied by officers who talked with him. Apparently he is a stranger in the west end since no one in that section of the city who saw him knew the man. $100 Reward, $100. The readers of this paper will be pleased to learn that there is at least one dreaded disease that science has been able to cure in all its stages and that is catarrh. Hall's Catarrh Cure is the only positive cure now known to the medical fraternity. Catarrh being a constitutional disease, requires a constitutional treatment. Hall's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, acting directly on the blood and mucous surfaces of the system, thereby des troying the foundation of the disease, and giving the patient strength by building up the constitution and as sisting nature in doing its work. The proprietors have so much faith in its curative powers that the3r offer one Hundred Dollars for any case that it fails to cure. Send for list of testimonials. Address F. J. Cheney & Co., Toledo,0. The race problem at the Ohio Northern University, which has stirred up quite a commotion in the Law Department the past three weeks on account of the authorities of the university admitting to that department a colored man by the name of J. O. Koontz, reached a climax today. The lawyers protested against his admission time after time, but no action was taken by the faculty. It finally came to the Trustees, who likewise took no definite action. Today the lawyers made a final stand in the matter by refusing to attend any more classes in which the negro is reciting. It is rumored that Koontz was hired to come here to break the precedent established by the old management. Some students refused to enroll until the negro is removed. The matter is causing a great deal of excitement in the school, and but a few students are in favor of retaining the colored man. Never before in the history of the university has a colored man been admitted. It looks as though the lawyers were determined in their action and will push their claims to the uttermost. Dr. Bell, president of the university, is out of town and the authorities in charge are powerless in the matter. Koontz. who tried to enter the Ohio Northern University three years ago, is a quiet and inoffensive young man, yet public sentiment is in favor of the law students.

May Lead to the Capture of Vice President Barber. Los Angeles, Cal., Sept. 2. The scenes in the sensational failure of the Commercial Bank of Cambridge, Ohio, and the disappearance of its Vice President and Director Herbert O. Barber have been shifted to Los Angeles, and the added lines in the melodrama tell the story of a search by the Sheriff and later by the police for the missing man. The Commercial Bank of Cambridge failed June 14, and immediately there after Barber disappeared. He was prominent in the town and engaged to marry Miss Carrie Norris. When disgrace, overtook her fiance Miss Nor ris also left Cambridge, ostensibly to go to Marietta, Ohio, to visit friends, but she has not been since heard from. The fact that she cannot be located adds to the interest of a telegram received here stating that Barber has been traced to Los Angeles and was living under an assumed name with a woman at the Hollenbeck Hotel. The identification of Barber was made by former Cambridge man. The Cambridge Chief wired Sheriff White to arrest Barber, but by the time the Sheriff's men went to the hotel Barber and the woman had left. Yesterday Chief of Police Hammel was requested by Chief Blair by wire to arrest Barber. Chief Hammel 's men Avent to the Hollenbeck, but failed to find the banker and the woman supposed to be his wife. Chief Hammel said today that all trae of Barber had been lost, so far as Los Angeles was concerned. "I believe he is still in the city, though, and if we had been notified at the start we could have landed him without any trouble," said the chief. The police have no description of Baiber and are tracing, him more by means of the woman than anything else. When troubled with constipation try Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets.
