HAMLET OF PRODUCERS

One Valuable Lot Owner Absent for

Three Years Some Very Valuable Property.

Muneie, Ind., August, 30. Today there are three little patches of ground in Smithfield which can not show a "producer," but this is due to no dearth of the valuable fluid under them. Two belong to men who are already drawing in each month a comfortable royalty from the Standard Oil company. The third is the property of Samuel Waldo, seventy years old, from whom nothing has been heard for two or three years. So close to his straggling bit of soil are oil wells that one may stand in the alley in the rear of it and touch with a fishing rod, such as Smithfield urchins are wont to use in the pleas-

an tsummer days, any one of two or

three big " oilers."

Seven years ago he left his native town and his real estate to seettle in

the cummunistic colony that flowered

for a time at Fitzgerald, Ga. Then

he returned.

But since his last departure no one has heard from him. Some say he is

dead. Others believe that he will re

turn to claim his fortune. Perhaps it is well for him that his whereabout

are unknown.

Many an oil operator has cast a longing eye on his weedy rectangle of earth that is called a lot. His place of residence known, it were a very easv jnatter to buv a railroad

ticket there. A "perfectly legitimated, provided, of course, Mr. Waldo mate" deal might be easily consumhad not heard of the boom in property at his old home. And except for those thiee lots, Smithfield is the thoroughly punctur-

Say what you will about druggists

offering something "just as good" because it pays better profit, the fact still stands that ninety-nine out of a hundred druggists recommend Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy when the best remedy for diarrhoea is asked for, and do so because they know it is the one remedy that can always be depended upon, even in the most severe and dangerCo"ahd" W." St'ies Worn by Convict?. (New O' leans Times-Deri, erat.) ' 'Did you ever stop to think about the origin of stripes, we use in our prisons?" said a man with an eye for the curious. "If you have not, it will not take you long to figure the thing out if you happen to know anything about the bible. The fact is that we get the ideas from the old dispensation. When I say We, I mean the people of our civilization, of our own day and time, and who live under and are guided by our systems and notions. For instance, in the laws and ordinances of Deuteronomy we find the following, which will give us a clew. to the origin of stripes as a badge of infamy: 'If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, then they shall justify the righteous and condemn the wicked And it shall be, if the wicked man' be worthy to be beaten, that the judge shall cause him to lie down and be beaten before his face, according to his fault, by a certain number. Forty stripes may be given him, and not exceed, lest if he should exceed and beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should seem vile unto thee.' Now, instead of inflicting these physical stripes, we put striped clothes on the men who offend the law or who may 'come unto judgment, that the judges may judge them,' as it is put in the text. Of course, you should go much further back in history if you cared to trace the origin of marks of infamy, but you would find that physical mutilation of some sort in a majority of instances afforded the means."
