AN $1,800 COLLAR Bought for Japanese Spaniel Belonging to Lillian Russell. Saratoga, August 27. Miss Lillian Russell's little dog is easily the most aristocratic animal in Saratoga today, as he trots proudly about wearing an $1,800 collar. He is a tiny creature, a Japanese spaniel, with long, fluft'lfy hair, white and black patches, a small pug nose and bright eves. Miss Russell is very fond of a a. him, and she has been photographed many times holding him in her arms. She takes him driving with her frequently. Jesse Lewisohn, who is occupying a cottage with Miss Russell here, is permitted to take the dog out with him on his walks. He sauntered up to the Grand Union Hotel yesterday afternoon holding the dog in his hand. David Gideon was with him, and they stopped to converse with a group of horsemen standing near one of the pillars. After canvassing the merits of the horses entered for the day's racing, and selecting prospective winners for each event on the card, the conversation drifted to the dog in Lewisohn 's arms, and all present expressed admiration. Mr. Lewisohn after paying it as pretty compliments
as any dog would care to hear about himself, asked the men with him if they would step into the jeweler's while he bought a dog collar? Michael Dreicer said he did not keep an' dog collars intended for dogs, but he thought that a bracelet intended for a woman's arm would do, so the party inspected bracelets. The only one that attracted Mr. Lewisohn 's fancy specially was a heavy gold chain studded with diamonds and rubies, and worth $1,800. All present agreed that it was very becoming, and the dog ran around so proundly that Lewisohn decided to buy it. There are several other dogs in Saratoga that are scarcely less pampered than Miss Russell's pet. A beautiful little Pomeranian attracts some attention at the United States hotel. He, too, has jewels in his collar. His mistress does not hesitate to let him kiss her face because she has his teeth cleaned every day and his mouth rinsed. Another woman at the United States has shoes bought in Paris for her dog, so that he does not get dirty when he is taken for a walk.

BEADING NOVELS
Was Cause of Mrs. Wallin Losing Her Mind. Elkhart, Ind., Aug. 20. Mrs. Thos. Wallin, a niece of the late Secretary of State Walter Q. Gresham, has been declared of unsound mind by an inquest composed of Drs. Rekelman and Randolph and Justice Brumbaugh. Her trouble is the result of reading too many novels, it being her boast that she averaged one book a day. A month ago her husband found her in the front yard after midnight declaring that she was threatened with abduction by a neighbor. A physician was called and absolute quiet prescribed. She was forbidden to read. For a time her life was despaired of, but she began to mend rapidly, and her complete recovery seemed assured. Recently Mrs. Wallin was seized with insane spells again, and her husband discovered that she had secured
possession of old novels and had been violating instructions relative to l-eading.

Many Weird Scenes. In "The Struggle Between Capital and Labor" to be presented by Kummery and Hanish at the Gennett Theater next Tuesday evening many out of the ordinary things occur and scenes are presnted that remove the piece from "'the common place" melodrama of the day. While built on new lines the play is full of thrilling situations and advance sheets say "a vein of comedy ripples through it all.' This statement will be hailed with delight by theater goers for the usual alleged comedy lines in a melodrama very seldom materialize.
TREES GUT FAST
California Species Springs Up 20 Feet in 18 Months. (Los Angeles Times.) A tree which grew nearly twenty feet in a year and a half has just gone from the experimental station in Santa Monica Canyon to the World's Fair toshow what California can do when iu ahurry for a place in the shade. It holds the champion long distance tree sprinting record of the United States. It is a variety of eucalyptus. A small grove of these trees was planted on a shaggy cliff back of the experimental station, where it seemed as though no tree could grow at all. But the rate at which they have shot up under skillful attention almost staggers belief. When this particular tree was about a year and a half old it measured four inches in diameter. They had to pull it up for fear it would break the Santa Monica speed ordinance. In order to get it safely to the fair the whole tree was carefully packed in mosses and soaked clothes. After its ragtime career under Abbot Kinney and others the experimental station is now a successful blooming garden. One of the interesting features of the work is importing trees from foreign countries and trying them in California soil and climatic conditions First one soil, then another, is tried until a congenial one is found. One of the additions to the California tree famill thus made is one of the most beautiful trees in the world a jacaranda covered with immens lilac flowers. The whole makes an effect of bewildering beauty.

Negro Friends Allowed No Foolishness. Clarksville, Tenn., August 27. While Harris's Nickel Plated shows were giving an exhibition here yesterday afternoon one of the clowns was burlesquing President Roosevelt. This gave offense to some of Teddy's negro supporters in the crowd and two of the darkies took the matter up. A fight ensued between two of the clowns and two negroes, during which T. Martin, colored, was badly beaten about the head. The four men were arrested.

INDIANA'S GREAT DAY
No Substitute Offered Say what you wJU about druggists offering something "just as good" because it pays better profit, the fact still stands that ninety-nine out of a hundred druggists recommend Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy when the best remedy for diarrhoea is asked for, and do so because they know it is the one remedy that can always be depended upon, even in the most severe and dangerous cases. Immense Gathering Looked for at the World's Fair, September 1. Present indications point to a record-breaking day at St. Louis Thursday, September 1st, when the celebration of Indiana Day takes place at the World's Fair. The large number of Indiana people intending to be' present at this great State function is shown by the advance requisitions for tickets to St. Louis the ensuing fortnight. The special low fares from Indiana to St. Louis has stimulated such interest that every provision is made for handling larger crowds of excursionists than at first expected. Representatives of Indiana interests having exhibits in the Exposition public officials and citizens generally who have already signified their intentions of being at the greatest of all Fairs on Indiana Day show that the next few days will see the heaviest movement from Indiana to St. Louis since the opening of the
World's Fair. Governor Durbin and 1 his staff will leave Indianapolis fori St. Louis Wednesday, August 31sjt, over the Vandalia Line. On the eV-: ening of the same day, the Newsboys' Band of the Indianapolis News, consisting of about eighty members will f also go over? the Vandalia Line to Stf
