CHURCH

REAL EXTENT CAN NOW BE SEEN CELLAR IS COMPLETED WORK ON FIRST FLOOR To Be Started Soon as Iron Pillars Are in Place Interest in The Work. The real extent of the Reid Memo rial church, as it will appear when completed, can now be readily seen, the work having reached the first stage of completion the finishing of the cellar and the preparations for the first floor. The first floor will be several feet higher than the side walk and a wide pair of steps will lead up to the church on, the southeast corner, for which already the space has been laid off. In the rear and front the white stone facing has been put in place and is being backed with brick. The sidewalls of the cellar are now all finished and the iron pilars for the support of the first floor are being placed in position. Much interest is being attracted in the work and there are many "sightseers" there at almost all hours. A good sized force of workmen is at work and the first floor of the church, the largest in the city, will be laid in a few weeks. The Vhite stone which the structure will have on the outside is very beautiful and will present a very fine appearance. With the use of a derrick the blocks of stone are being placed into position rapidly. The rapidity with which the work is being done is very gratifying to the mem bers of the church and the church committee. Louck and Hill are putting forth all their efforts in the mat ter of the completion, as it is one of the largest and finest jobs that have been done in the city in the building line for many years. , Catarrh Cannot be Cured with local applications, as they can not reach the seat of the disease. Ca tarrh is a blood or constitutional dis ease and in order to cure it you must take internal remedies. Hall 's Catarrh Cure is taken internally, and acts d'fcectly on the blood and mucous surfaces. Hall's Catarrh Cure is not a quack medicine. It was prescribed by one of the best physicians in this country for years and is a regular prescription. WHITEWASH

A Formula Invented Grant. by General Here is the formula for a white wash that is used exclusivelv bv the United States in the preservation of ihe soldiers' barracks through nit the country, ami in all other re-oeets where a brightening effect is essential. Not only that but the recipe bears the indorsement of a distiniriishe I chief executive of the nation, and is about the first instance of record where a pres cient has condesc .nded to honor one of his constituents to the extent of setting forth in hi own landwriting J.e merits of a com;r..,nplace but useful article. Stcry of the Secret. The story of how this secrel lias now become public property is ot with out its interesting details. While y l a Lieutenant, fresh from ckrlous achievement in the war with Mexico. J. S. Grant was assigned to duty at Senieia Bj'.racks, California, and sailed for his post from New Yoik via the Isthmus of Panama on July 5, 852. Cholera became ept'fiuie among the troops and he was left et Chagres River in chargre of the sick. the disease eventually carrying off fully one seventh of his command. On the Fated Ship. Lieutenant Grant and his troops were transported to San Francisco from Panama on the ill-fated steamship Golden Age, which afterward foundered at sea, causing immense loss of life. At the time she brought young Grant to the Pacific Coast the chief engineer of the vessel was a man well known in the shipping circles named Captain John Bulson. whose widow and family are still residents of San Francisco. Lieutenant Grant formed quite an attachment for the bluff old seaman and the two maintained a personal correspond ence extending, with occasional interruptions, throughout Grant's civil and military life from their first meeting. It appears that the captain after the wreck of the Golden Age, becoming weary of following the sea, secured a position on shore that brought him more or less in relationship with affairs about the harbor, and becoming dissatisfied with the quality of whitewash that was used by state authority upon the buildings connected with the wharves, in his extremity wrote to Grant, who was then serving 1 n -n ..... ins nrst Presidential term, rermest "'i, 'ui. mien iciiii, ici uesirt i l j v. ing to be furnished with the process amr.l,J,U ii . . employed by the government in mixin. ii iAiTc n i. ing the ingredients. While the reference to the use of the I whitewash upon the exterior of the 1 Executive mansion may occur to many as a vein of grim humor for which he was noted, it is a well-known fact that the appearance of the structure was periodically brightened in this manner prior to its complete renovation at a later period.
