HANY FIRES
ON BRIDGES SPAEKS FROM LOCOMOTIVES V SET THEM ON FIRE RICHMOND DIVISION Has Had Many of These Small Fires D. & W. Bridges Cause Trouble Railroad Notes. As a result of the dry weather, which tends to make wooden bridges especially inflammable, there have been quite a number of fires, all of them small and resulting in no serious dam age, on many of the small wooden bridges on the divisions of the Pennsylvania lines leading out of this city. The sparks of the engine fly back and are-caught and held by the en closing bridge, sometimes smolder and burst out into flame, with the result that a bridge is burnt. The frequency of these bridge fires of late has led to the issuing of an order by TV. B. Wood, local superintendent, for the members of the train crew to watch carefully when pass ing through a wooden bridge lest any sparks might set the structure afire. The trainmen are warned to look out when through a bridge to determine whether any sparks have lodged in the dry wooden structures. The most of these fires have been on the division between here and In dianapolis, and although some of them have seemed to be serious, the dam age has been slight in all cases. Trainmen say that it is very hard to determine whether a chance spark has set the bridge on fire on account of the fact that before a smoldering spark may have burst into flame the train might be miles awav. Orders have been issued from the Panhandle offices to the effect that the speed of the trains to and from Cincinnati to Richmond be lowered to fifteen miles an hour when near and under the new interurban bridges of the Dayton & "Western road. The engineers are ordered to be pre pared to stop in emergency and are ordered to look 'out for obstructions on the traek. The bridges are not proving to be all that they were ex pected to be and the order for the slowing of locomotives to thespeed imit is the result. At several stations on local divis ions of the Panhandle railroad, including Cambridge City, Centerville and others, telephones have been installed in order that the trainmen may inform the signalmen when the trains are in the "clear." This instalation of phones is another of the numerous safeguards with which the ennsylvania lines are protecting the passengers and the results of this are expected to be beneficial. The yard limit on the Pennsvlvania and the G. R. & I. railroad yards just west of the Whitewater bridge have been extended one hundred feet to the westward. Cholera Infantum Thte disease has lost its terrors since Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy came into general use.
