Veterans of the Civil War Gather by Thousands In Boston Town. THE AUXILIARY BODIES With the Veterans There Meet the Various Organizations Allied to the Grand. Army. Choice of Gen. Black's Successor A Commander-in-Chief Attracts Much Attention. Boston, Aug. 15. The national encampment of the Grand. Army of the Republic with its several affiliated bodies opened in this city today, and la expected to be one of the largest in recent years. The city is extensively and handsomely decorated in honor of the occasion and the Boston Common and public streets bear electrical illuminations of unusual brilliancy. Commander-in-Chief Black, accompanied from Washington by members "of GENERAL JOHN O. BLACK. his family, arrived at encampment headquarters at 4 o'clock Sunday after noon and was given a rousing recep tion. In connection with the meetings of the Grand Army there will be held the annual gatherings of the National Wo man's Relief Corps, the National Daughters of Veterans, the National Sons of Veterans; the National Ladies' Aid society, auxiliary to the Sons of Veterans; the National Ladies of the G. A. R.; the National Army Nurses' association, the National Association of Naval Veterans, and the National Association oi Ex-Prisoners of War. The meetings and reunions of these various organizations will continue un til Saturday. The feature of the week will be the parade of the Grand Army men on Tuesday, when it is expected that from 20,000 to 40,000 will be in line. On Tuesday evening the mammoth campflre of the Grand Army will be held in Mechanics' building. William M. Olin of this state will preside and arrangements have been made to re ceive 10,000 people. On Wednesday the Women's Relief Corps of the G. A R., the Sons of Veterans, the Daugh ters of Veterans, and other associa tions will hold their annual business sessions. Much interest centers in the choice of the new commander-in-chief, For this office there are already several prominent candidates, including General Wilmont W. Blackman of Mas sachusetts; Colonel John C. Shotts and Colonel Allen C. Bakewell of New York. The annual meetings are ex pected to last through Thursday. A GLITTERING GATHERING Thousands of Uniformed Pythlans In Session at Louisville. Louisville, Ky., Aug. 15. Thou sands of members of the Uniform Rank, Knights of Pythias, have ar rived in Louisville to be present at the biennial encampment which opened today. The Kentucky brigade of 600 Is on escort duty. Divided into commit tees, the Kentuckians meet each train and pilot the arriving Pythians lo the tented city at Shawnee park, where accommodations have been prepared for 20,000 people. The delegations from nearby states are expected to be largely augmented today, as numerous special trains are scheduled to arrive, one road alone having notice of ten extra trains on the way. A New Orleans committee opened headquarters at the Gait House today and entered actively in the fight for the next biennial. The Nashville and Boston committees are already at work for the honor, and Cincinnati is expected to enter the lists Tuesday. The business meetings of the conclave do not begin until Tuesday morning, and, judging from the numerous matters of interest which are to come up, the sessions will continue until Friday night. The parade is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon and the competitive drills begin Wednesday. Republican Campaign Textbook. Washington, Aug. 15. Tariff, prosperity, labot, wages and prices ; trusts, the Panama canal, Cuba and Cuban reciprocity, expansion and its results, the investigations of the postal and land frauds, and punishment of offenders, rural free delivery, irrigation, the record of tbe Republican party and the record of Theodore Roosevelt, are the leading subjects discussed by the Republican campaign text-book of 1904, which is just about to be Issued.

After prolonged pour parlours and considerable haggling on, the part of the Turks, a satisfactory solution of the American school question has been arrived at. Will Go to Gibraltar. Washington, Aug. 15. The United States war vessels now at Smyrna un der commanad of Rear Admiral Jewell are the Cleveland, the Olympia and the Baltimore. They will leave Smyr na today and will sail for Gibraltar The ships comprise what is known as the American European squadron, and will continue their cruise in European waters for some time. Va., to attend the notification ceremonies on Wednesday of the vice presidential candidate, Henry G. Davis. Arrested the Drug Clerk. St. Louis, Aug. 15. Chas. Farthing a drug clerk, was arrested Sunday on a charge of having caused the death of Mrs. Jennie Helms, wife of Merits! Helms of New York. Mrs. Helms died after suffering great agony for severs hours after taking a dose of what she supposed was cream of tartar, which her husband, it is alleged, purchased from Farthing. Kurds Destroy Two Villages. Constantinople, Aug. 15. A band of Armenians has been attacked by Turkish troops in the village of Scham iron, five hours' travel north of Bitlis Asiatic Turkey. Kurds are alleged to have taken part in the attack. Two villages are reported to have been de stroyed. World's Fair Attendance. St. Louis, Aug. 15. World's Fair Grounds The admissions last week show an increase of 65,000 over the previous si", days, which was the lar gest tot'A since the opening of the exposition. The total for the week was 666,607. Twenty Horses Perished. Lexington, Ky., Aug. 15. Twenty horses perished in a fire at the trotting track. 'It is estimated that the loss is $100,000. Most of the horses that perished were fancy saddle and harness and matinee horses. Death List Swelled. P"9blo, Col Aug. 15.
