STATE LIBBARY

PROSPECTUS FOR AN INDIANA QUARTERLY SHOULD HAVE SUPPORT Of All Historical Societies State Librarian Henry, Manager George S. Cottman, Editor. The State Librarian, Mr. W. E. Henry, and Mr. George S. Cottman, a well known writer and an authority on various phases of the early history of the State, have issued an interesting circular setting forth the details of a proposed Indiana Quarterly Magazine of History. The neglect of the historical material in this State which should have been preserved in various forms has been notorious in the past and it is now proposed to remedy this in so far as possible and to present its re-occurrence in the future. The circular sent out says: "An interest in these things in this State sufficient to support a magazine of local history is only a matter of time. Such interest is not a sporadic one, but a natural growth based on the science of sociology and the advancing conception that society, as well as the individual, is "a balance of all preceding forces." Already something like a score of States are represented by as many periodical publications, a number of them quarterly magazines, devoted to the preservation of local material. Some of these, such as Michigan, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota, and younger States than our with, perhaps, less history to record. "What the publishers of this prospectus now wish to determine is whether Indiana is yet ready to join this group. Most of the publications mentioned have back of them historical societies of their several States. We, unfortunate, can look to no central organization for such support, but local societies are springing up in a number of counties, and if these will evince an interest proportionate to the service we can render them they can go far toward making our proposed publication a reality. ' 1 To the members of these . societ ies and to others who think an interest in our past worth promoting as of value to the present, then, we make an appeal. Guarantee us even a modest support and the magazine will be forthcoming. Five hundred, subscribers at one dollar each will cover the cost of publication and distribution for one year. If we can raise a subscription to that amount, payable on receiving the first issue, we will publish four numbers of 50 (or more) pages each, corresponding in size and amount of matter to the pages of this circular. "The publication will be strictly what it purports to be at the start a magazine devoted to the preservation and collating of matter that is of real value to the historical student. There will be no space given to advertising t( write-ups,' ' and no cheap padding. Of matter within its legitimate field there is an abundance, and outside of this field it will make no bid for popular favor." Cholera Infantum Th"fe disease has lost its terrors since Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera -and Diarrhoea Remedy came into general use. The uniform success which attends the use of this remedy in all cases of bowel complaints in children has made it a favorite wherever its value has become known. For sale by A. G. Luken & Co., and W. H. Sudhoff, Fifth and Main streets. Better Than Gold. "I was troubled for several years with chronic indigestion and nervous debility," writes F. J. Green, of Lancaster, N. H., "No remedy helped me until I began using Elictric Bftters which did me more good than all the medicines I ever used. They have also kept my wife in excellent health for years. She says Electric Bitters are just splendid for female troubles; that they are a grand tonic and invigorator for weak, run down women. No other medic'Aie can take its place in our family.'' Try them. RAILROAD NOTES
Stop-Over Privileges Allowed on PanhandleOther News. The Pennsylvania has decided to allow stop-over privileges within transit limits either going or returning from St. Louis at any point on its line east of Pittsburg and Buffalo and north of Washington on the World's Fair ticket, excepting those sold on the coach excursions. This is increasing the travel. The Baltimore & Ohio Southwestern is reported to be doing a heavy business since the same privileges were granted. The Panhandle company has ordered for its shops at several points an eight-hour day schedule with no work on Saturday. Up to this week the men have been working five hours on Saturday. It is thought this reduction of hours will be but temporary. On several divisions of the Pennsylvania lines, west, section men have a new scale of wages, being now paid $1.25 a day during the first year of their employment and $1.35 the second year and $1.40 the fourth year. By placing in service bigh speed motors the schedule between Indianapolis and Richmond on the traction line will be reduced thirty minutes. The C, H. & D. yesterday began to deliver to the C, C. & L. a through coach from Cincinnati and receive a coach from the C, C. & L. daily. This is the first coach of this character run. It is stated that the freight business between the two lines at Cottage City has nearly doubled within the last ten days since they began to receive through traffic for Chicago. Mrs, Anderson. Jacksonville. Fla., daughter of Recorder of Deeds, West, who witnessed her signature to the following letter, praises Lydia E Pinkham's Vegetable Compound. " Dejlb Mrs. Piskham : There are but few wives and mothers who have not at times endured agonies and such pain as only women know. I wish such women knew the value of Lydia E. Pinkham's Vegetable Compound It is a -remarkable medicine, different in action from any I ever knew and thoroughly reliable. "I have seen many cases where women doctored for years without permanent benefit, who were cured in less than three months after taking your Vegetable Compound, while others who were chronic and incurable came out cured, happy, and in perfect health after & thorough treatment with this medicine. I have never used it myself without gaining great benefit. A few doses restores my strength and appetite, and tones up the entire system. Your medicine has been tried and found true, hence I fully endorse it." Mrs. R. A. Anderson, 225 Washington St., Jacksonville, Fla. fSOOO forfeit If original of above letter proving gtnuinenese cannot be produced. No other medicine for women has received such widespread and unqualified endorsement. No other medicine has such a record of cures of female troubles. Ref use to buy any substitute.
