The Palladium announced the other day that "Jed" Newkirk and his "99)" was at Terre Haute and intended giving1 the people some fast

running. It was also predicted that system

a number of people 'would be disappointed. That such was the case will be gleaned from the following dispatch: Terre Haute, Ind., Aug. 7. Thirty five hundred people who had gone to the fair grounds this afternoon to see the automobile races, the star feature1 of which was to have been J. S. Newkirk 's race in the "999," were disappointed. Newkirk was advertised to make a race against the world's record, which is now held by the machine he drives. The "999" refused to work on Sunday. The anxious people waited from 3

perfectly but by promoting an efficient man from a subordinate position Promotion by merit cannot be always acted on, so that frequently men of little or no training and experience are called to fill positions of responsibility vacated by better qualified officials. Even if the system of promotion by merit were always followed there would have to be, at some point, an inexperienced man appointed to replace an experienced hand. The purpose of a great corporation with thousands of employes should be even from the purely business standpoint, to make its army of wage earners more contented and thus more constantly loyal and efficient to the interests placed in their keeping. One man who has nursed a grievance until it maddens him may in an hour inflict more damage than an effort to satisfy a thousand such could cost. Contentment and efficiency in workmen are worth the price. The garden for railway men is the correct thing, suggested by humanity, indorsed by business perspicacity. The Avorkingmen's gardens in France have done much to solve vexatious social problems in that country. The railway men's gardens on the Pennsylvania

will bring workingman and

employer closer. It will secure better service for the railway by giving more

comfortable and cheerful homes Tc its workmen. The Pennsylvania will, by making common cause with its toilers in this direction, prompt other measures of co-operation which shall in time obliterate entirely the strike and the lockout.

o'clock until after G o'clock to see the dare devil make his ride and at G:30 the race was called off and "V. II. Pickens, manager for Newkirk, was taken in charge by Captain of Police Battie and taken to the police station. After the people had waited' for hours and it had become certain that the racing machine could not be operated, hoodlums agitated an attack on Manager Pickens, and although there was no disturbance the authorities deemed it advisable to take Piekents from the grounds. At the police station he explained that the action of the machine was unavoidable. It was agreed to have Newkirk drive next Sunday, when those who attended today's meet will

be admitted free.

Mrs. Maybrick's Continued Sojourn

at Rouen is Causing Annoyance.

Paris, Aug. 7. Mrs. Florence Maybrick's sojourn at Rouen is causing annoyance locally, the neighbors complaining of the unpleasant notoriety and the officials weary of the constant questioning of reporters. There is reason to believe that Mrs. Maybrick's departure will not long be delayed. The order given in the town for making a traveling costume have been countermanded, but it is ascertained that a dressmaker is work ing in the house daily. Among the Americans here are Jas. Hamilton Lewis, who is prosecuting a claim for $41,000 against the .new Panama canal company in behalf of Samuel Doll of Chicago.

a few months prior to baby's advent ; in fact, it is of great benefit in all forms of female weakness." WHY WOMEX SHOULD CONFIDE IK A MAN. It is much easier for a woman to confide in the average man than in the average woman. She knows that the man will respect her confidences and keep them to. himself. He is strong, has more experience of the world and can help the woman who needs advice. Without a perfect medical understanding there can be no helpful advice, women should not trust their delicate constitutions in the hands of unskilled persons. It requires a thorough medical education to appreciate and understand the womanly organism. s When a woman has ills and pains that she cannot bear when lite seems dark for every woman, she should confide her troubles to a physician of standing in the community, or one who has a national reputation. Certainly it would not be the part of wisdom to confide in an ignorant person without medical education simply because she was a woman. There is every reason why she should write to some great specialist, one who has made the diseases of women a specialty for a third of a century, like Dr. R. V. Pierce, founder of the Invalids' Hotel and Surgical Institute, of Buffalo, N. Y. All correspondence is held sacredly confidential, and he gives his advice free and without

At such a time when she is nervous, dyspeptic, irritable and in need of a uterine tonic something which will calm the nervous system through the special organs, and a strength builder, she will find Doctor Pierce's Favorite Prescription just what is needed. Here is a medicine that has stood the test of a third of a century with approval, in that time it has sold more largely than any other remedy put up specially for woman's weaknesses. It is guaranteed by the proprietors not to contain a particle of alcoholwhich could only do harm to a sensitive system. "If mothers who dread the baby's coming would take Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription they would find it a great help and benefit," writes Mrs. L. E. Henderson (President Milwaukee Woman's Literary Club), of 123 Grand Avenue, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. "After the birth of my first child I did not seem to regain my health, so began to take your medicine and in two weeks felt stronger and able to be out, so kept on taking it for two months and found at the end of that time I had completely regained my usual health. I

alo found that it was of benefit to take charge.

We guarantee that Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription does not contain

alcohol, opium, or any harmful drug. It is a pure compound of medicinal plants scientifically combined. Persons making false statements concerning its ingredients will be prosecuted.

very often find that it is repugr.?vt tt their feelings to consult their family physician. In such a case tliev can put perfect confidence in Dr. Pierce, who lias made such a success in the treatment of woman's diseases, for he will give the very btt advice jmssible and without cost. To grow Im'uiuuuI, healthy and happy should be the desire of evety woman. It is then possible to hold a husband and make home hanpv and bring contentment to it. In most cases Dr. 1. V. sure of it is the World's Dispensary Medical Association, of Buffalo, X. Y., proprietors of Dr. Pierce's Favorite Prescription, that they offer a $500 REWARD for women who cannot be cure of Leucorrhea. Female Weakness. Prolapsus, or Falling of Womb All they ask is a fair and reasonable trial of their means of cure. Dr. Pierce's Favorite Inscription restores weak ami sick women to sound health, by curing the. local womanly diseases which are generally resjwnible for the failure of the general health. A woman's entire being is centered in her womanly nature. When the delicate womanly orgauiMn is attacked by

uiseasc; wnen mere s irregularity or a disagreeable drain; when intlammation burns and ulcers gnaw, the general health will reflect the progress of disease, in increasing weakness, nervousness, backache, headache, loss of appetite ami sleeplessness. 'A long time ago 1 suffered very much from female weakness, and decided to write Dr. Pierce," says Mollie French, of 340 E. Green Street, Ixuisville, Ky. " I received a kind answer telling me what to do. Followed your directions, commenced taking your ' Favorite Prescription, and was cured, after trying manv other remedies, and

different doctors. I have been told -Jr

mat mere is ueiter meaicine, out i have not found it, although have been sold other remedies. There are no medicines like Dr. Pierce's, after all. I can't write how I suffered; was of no account to myself or any one else; could hardly stand on my feet or walk around. When I received your kind

letter, that helped me a great deal. Will take your medicine as long as I am able to buy it; it has saved me many a useless doctor bill. When I need a physician I write to Dr. Pierce, and then do whatever he tells me." Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets invigorate the stomach, liver and bowels. Use them with the "Favorite Prescription" when a pill is required. One is a laxative, two a mild cathartic. KNOW THYSELF. A Most Commendable One Worthy of

Emulation. The Pennsylvania Railway Company has under consideration a proposition to divide vacant ground along its line among its employes for garden purposes. That rich and far-seeing corporation has before now realized that a contented employe is of much more value to his employers than a grumbler. A home with pleasant surroundings is a security and an incentive to a normal man. Home with its restf ulness is the desire of

every toiler.

The homeless man cannot work with the regularity and efficiency of his fellow safeguarded and strengthened by home comforts and blessings. President Cassatt of the Pennsylva-

nia, is no dreamer. L.iKe an eminently successful business men, he studies things as they are, and by wise, prudent, cautious, gradual management strives to bring them, year by year, nearer to what they ought at the best to be. i The richest possession of any corporation is not its plant, or its subscribed capital, or its reserve fund, but its corps of efficient employes. Easy it is to say that men are easily i replaced. No efficient man is replaced
