SOCIAL BY WARREN CLEMENTS i Mrs. Harry Hill and Mrs. Howard Jones were the hostesses at the usual weekly morning 'whist party at the Country Club this morning-. There was a large attendance of members of the club Avith a number of out of town guests including- Mrs. Scfltt McDonald, of Richmond, Virginia, with her guest Miss Ellen Pollard, of the same city; Mrs. Charles Malott, formerly Miss Pearl Haines of this city, now of Indianapolis; Mrs. Edward Wilmington and Mrs. Howard Dickhut, of Indianapolis; Mrs. Edmund Cupper; Mrs. Ernest Findley of Denver, Colo., and Miss Lucy Harding, of Indianapolis. Charming prizes were awarded, the party proving one of the most delightful of the series given by the entertainment committee of the Club. Miss Louise Beihl, of Cincinnati, who has been visiting Miss Mary "Woodhurst, returned home this afternoon. o The East End Sewing, Circle meets Friday afternoon with Mrs. W. P. O'Neal at 5G South sixteenth street. The "Woman's Home and Foreign Missionary Society of the First English Lutheran church, will meet at the Glen on Thursday afternoon, August 4th, at two o'clock. A large number of guests from this city have been entertained by the young ladies making up the house party in the old Morton homestead at Centerville, Miss Kelsey and Miss Barnett, the chaperons proving delightful hostesses. A dance will be given Thursday evening and several parties are being made up iu response to the invitations sent out. Mrs. William T. Brown, with her mother, Mrs. S terry, of Indianapolis, arrived today to be guests of Rev. and Mrs. Madison Swadener. of the First M. E. church. Their daughter, Miss Grace Swadener of Marion, Indiana, is also making them an extended visit. The regular Meeting of the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the First M. E. church met with Mrs. Charles Wolfer, of 309 south eighteenth street this afternoon. An unusually interesting program was given, arranged by the leader, Mrs. Ida Smith, a detailed account of which will be given tomorrow. Mrs. Anna Ferguson entertained the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society of the First Baptist church this afternoon, at her home, 403 north thirteenth street. A special program relating to the life and people of India was given, one paper being given on 'Hindu Social Customs," and "News from the Foreign Field," being one of the interesting features. 'There was lalso special music, Mrs. Johnson, l daughter of the Rev. Addison Parker, pastor, singing a hymn in the Korean j tongue. Light refreshments were serv- ' ed and the occasion was an enjoyable one socially as well as interesting and instructive. Miss Edith Nicholson, who has been the guest of the families of Mr. Will and Mr. George Nicholson, prominent railway officials of Chicago, and who accompanied Mrs. George Nicholson and her daughter to Toledo, is now one of a house party in Lawrence. ' The annual ice cream social under the auspices of the Gonzaga Club, members of St. Andrew's Catholic church, was held on the lawn adjoining the church last evening, there being a large attendance. This was one of the most successful and enjoyable affairs every given by this club, whose membership is made up of well known young men of St. Andrew's, and resulted in a financial as well as a social success. Clyde Power gave a delightful garden and house party last night in honor of their visitor, Miss Hazel Phelps, of Richmond. The illuminations were entirely of Chinese lanterns of different shapes and colors, and for the rooms there were quantities of flowers. There was a special program of select readings and short talks, the guest of honor being Mrs. Hill, wife of the presiding elder, who has just returner to Richmond after an extended trip which included the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal church, held in Los Angeles, some time since. The county commissioners were in session yesterday considering the claims of ex-clerks and ex-sheriffs. A decision in the matter will be reached soon.
