Richmond Brakemen State That the Local Sentiment is Decidedly Against a Strike.
"It is not at all likely that the strike of the brakemen on the Pennsylvania railroad, over which so much fuss has been made of late, will materalize at all" said a prominent local brakeman yesterday evening to the Palladium when the strike was the subject of discussion. About two weeks ago it was announced and in all of the papers that are the leading authorities on railroad matters, that because of the reduction of one brakeman on the division between Columbus and Pittsburg a general strike has been ordered of all Pennsylvania union brakemen. The story was false, no strike having yet taken place, and in the opinion of all of the Richmond "brakies" that are local members of the Amalgamated Brakemen's Union, no strike will occur. "The feeling locally is very much against the strike," said another Richmond brokeman, prominent in the union." and all of the Richmond members of the brakeman s union would hate to be called on to strike, unless for some good reason, and the reason now alleged is a very poor one. We do not feel that our rights are being trampled on because one brakeman is reduced, and we think it very unlikely that any strike will be called. "If a 'general strike is called, of course we should obey the summons, but if the sentiment of the Richmond
brakemen and railroaders generally
should be considered, the strike
not be called for. At present the
brakemen are busy, the reduction of
their number a few weeks ago having extra duties to those that were re
tained, and a strike would hit us very hard. No, it is not likely that the
Richmond brakemen will strike, although I know that a few hotheads have been giving the old worn-out
song and dance about the rights of the working men being trampled on
and their liberalities snatched away."
... AMUSEMENTS.
Tilled to the Roof. The Henderson Stock company was the attraction that done an immense audience to the Gennett Theater last night and in the main pleased all. This afternoon "Woman Against Woman," is being presented and tonight's bill will be "The Man of Mystery." The Henderson company will do a 'great business in Richmond.
