TRAVELING ON BICYCLE Cambridge City Startled Over Acts of Strange Female Gives Up Stolen Goods.

(Special to the Palladium.) Cambridge City, Ind., July 25. An unknown young woman traveling on a bicycle, stopped at the home of John Guyton and asked for permission to get a drink of water, which was granted. After the departure of the unknown woman, Mrs. Joseph Bender, daughter of Mr. Guyton, missed her purse. Suspecting her recent female caller, Mrs. Bender drove hurriedly in the direction the woman was seen to go, with the hope of finding her purse. She overtook the woman a short dis tance from home and demanded the purse of her. The woman denied that she had it. Mrs. Bender insisted that she did and the woman finally yielded and took the purse from her hose and gave it to the owner. When Mrs. Bender returned home she discovered that her rings wei-e also gone. She again procured a horse and buggy and drove full speed after the woman this time armed with a revolver she had taken from home. After a continued chase she again overtook the intruder and at the point of the revolver demanded of the thief her jewelry, which was hurriedly produced from the other stocking.

Recalled by Correspondence Between

Senator Fairbanks and a Kansan A Hutchinson man has been having some interesting correspondence with Senator Fairbanks, Republican nominee for vice president, says the Kansas City Journal. His name is Howard Scott and many years ago he lived in the same town in Indiana with the senator. "Mr. Scott was a youth then," says the Hutchinson News, "and the sons of Senator Fairbanks were also youths. They lived side by side in a street and the boys were very chummy for quite a time. Scott was larger than the Fairbanks boy and one day when there had been a quarrel he slapped or spanked or whip ped one of the lads, going into the Fairbanks yard to do this. Mr. Fairbanks heard the noise being made so he came into the yard and took a hand in the game. He caught jToung Scott and gave him a glorious spanking and one that he remembers to this day. It was one of that sort that reached the spot and made that spot

too tender to sit down on for some time. After the spanking was quite

finished Mr. Fairbanks caught young

Scott by the seat of the pants and

placed him on the other side of the fence. ' '

After the nomination of Senator

Fairbanks for vice-president Mr.

Scott wrote to him recalling the spank ing. He said he had long waited to get even and that he would now east his vote against the Republican nominee for vice president. Fairbanks responded saying that he remembered the spanking episode very well. Moreover, he stated that he would take great pleasure in repeating the castigation, though he could not feel that a mere spanking was enough for a Kansas man who proposed to bolt any part of his ticket.
