51 IN THE STARBUCK CASE-SAYS WOMAN WAS MURDERED A PETITION WAS FILED By Women Appealing to Greensboro Authorities Not to Drop the Investigation. Greensboro, Ind., July 22. While there has been no headway in the effort to connect any one with the tragedy which resulted in the death of Mrs. William Star-buck and her infant, the people of this township are still vitally interested therein, and they are not taking kindly to any theory save that Mrs. Starbuck .was the victim of foul play. The county commissioners were importuned to offer a reward of $1,000 for the arrest and conviction of persons implicated in this tragedy, but the commissioners find that the appropriations have been exhausted and no more money is avail able until after a meeting of the County Council. The women of Greensboro have uni ted in an appeal to the authorities not to drop the investigation. Mr. and Mrs. Starbuck, in this petition, are characterized as among the best and most reliable of citizens, enjoying the fullest confidence of every one in the community, and the petitioners vehe mently assert that Mrs. Starbuck lost her life while defending herself again assault. Any onclusion different from this says the petition, will not satisfy this community, and it adds: "We feel that a stain has been east upon our county and state and we feel that womanhood i9 in danger. We, therefore, make this appeal to the of ficers and lawmakers of our county, that no effort be left untried to bring the perpetrators os such foul deeds to justice, that womanhood may be bet ter protected." Dr. Benjamin F. Patton, of Greens boro, has addressed a statement to the Indianapolis News, in response to a request from the public that he will give all of the facts connected with the Starbuck case coming under his observation. Dr. Patton describes the visit of Mr. Starbuck to his office on the evening of the tragedy, and that he prepared a prescription for the infant ehild, with which Mr. Starbuck started homeward. Dr. Patton describes the summons for him to come to the Starbuck home, and continuing he says: "I arrived at the Starbuck home, and found Mrs. Starbuck in a condition of profound nervous shock, her face terribly beaten and bruised. She was asking, 'What do you want?' and 'What are you after!' followed by 'Oh, go away; go away!' After administering nervine and stimulants she recovered consciousness and asked us, 'Oh, where is that ugly thing that carried me off?' and then, 'Where is my baby?' We replied, 'In the other room.' She said, 'I want to see it,' I told her the ehild was asleep and she eould not see it now, and she said, 'Where's Will?' Mr. Starbuck came and knelt by her couch, and she put her arm around him and said, 'Oh, Will, I've had such an awful time,' and then, shortly afterward, she said, 'Where is that terrible monster that caried me off ' She also asked, 'What is the matter with me, and what have I done?' apparently having lost consciousness before being thrown into the well. "When it became positively apparent that she could not recover I asked her if some men had carried her on, and she said, x es. ' 1 be nurse then asked if they acme in by the win dow, and she said 'Yes,' and looked toward the screen window where the screen was torn away. She was asked how many, and she answered 'I don't know how many.' We then asked her if she knew any of her assailants, but we could not understand her answer. She was then exhausted and fell asleep. "Now, as to the theory of insanity. Everything goes to prove the contrary Her statements, questions that she asked, show clearly that she was attacked. Her face and body were terribly bruised and battered. If this had been a case of fright during an attack of temporary insanity, she would not likely have taken down the telephone receiver, nor have gone out of the back door, which was found open; and then have gone back into the house and tore the serene from the window. Moreover,, she should have gone screaming from the house
state
and would have continued to scream until found, in which event some of
the neighbors could not have helped but heard her. "From the abrasion of the skin around her mouth and nose, to prevent her making a noise, until the want of oxygen, and in her effort to breath, some of the blood vessels or eapiallaries of the lungs burst, which would account for the pulmonary hemorrhage. "Puerperal insanity would not be very HKeiy to aappen lour months after her child's birth, and as todemen lia from lacation, all standard au thors say the dementia comes on slow ly and that there are premonitory jiuptoms of its appearance sivral days before an attack, and that it s caused from debility and nervous der n.'gement. Such conditions dM not exist, but, on the contrary, she was hi-althy and strong. Her physic1 and nervous condition wa above r!nj nver;ve. She t.'ways x cheej''! and hsppy.
