Pennsylvania Officials Do Not Tear Results Interchanging of Freight Now?
The advantages that the combination of the C. C. & L. road with the C. H. & D. system will afford to Richmond shippers is the subject of discussion in local railroad circles today. The C. C. & L. is going to make a

bid for a much larger proportion of freight than it has formerly been given, and this will probably cause competition and a consequent reduction of the now rather high freight rates. The C. it have to be changed and that in

and the probability of having a great
portion of the freight lost along the
way.
The Pennsylvania officials do not
think that the new system will lower
I the amount of freight taken out of
j here by the Panhandle road, as the
points will not be available on the system's road for some time, and fur
thermore, the Pennsylvania has by far the most switches and best accommodations for freight. The C. C. & L. has no switch in the northern or eastern part of the city, while the Pennsylvania draws all the freight from the long row of factories extending from first to sixteenth street, save that which is hauled by dray to (the ( C. & L.. It was feared by some that the 0. C. & L. would drawfreight from the factories that now are exclusively Panhandle ones because of the new field that the combination opens up, but this is not probable. The interchanging of freight from the Panhandle to the C C. & L. is railed for by many shippers who desire to send freight to direct 0. C
& L. points. This has been requested many times, but it hardly seems probable now that the C. C. & L. becomes a part of a large system, parts of which are in direct competition with the Pennsylvania lines.
TRACK BALLASTING. The Dayton & Western Traction company has been making fine progress with the ballasting of their
track on the west end, which has been in progress for several wqeks. The work is being done with grawl
taken from the bed of the dry creek
near Sycamore Valley school house,
into which a switch has been run mak
ing the loading of cars very conven
ient and expeditious. Work was com
menced at the Driving Park and has now reaced a point this side of the State line. All that' part of the track has been leveled up and is now in
fine condition.

Train Lost Tour Cars, But Coupled Up Again and Went On.
(Petersburg (Penn) Cor. Philadelphia Record. ) One of the seemingly impossible railroad accidents, which has been the theme for the story of many a hoary-headed knight of the throttle, while wiling away the leisure hours
in the oil house or round house bunkrooms to the wonder of the green hand, but which every old timer has declared an impossibility, actually occurred here this morning when a long coal train was speeding down the long piece of 'st raight track and heavy grade known as the Barree straigh line. An axle broke on a coal car about the middle of the train wrecking the car, which left the rails and tumbled over the embankment. Three more cars followed in its wake, after which the gap was closed, the automatic
coupler acting their part promptly, and the train went on its way. the crew knoAving nothing of the accident until half an hour later, when the
train was again wrecked, tliree cars
being smashed. A fcrack walker who

West New York, July 13. Anthony Sperner, a professional guitar player, who lives in East Sixteenth street, New York city, went through Adams street, this place, playing an air from the opera ''Romeo and Juliet" on his guitar, in the hope that the music would reach his wife, who eloped some time ago from New York The opera had always been a favorite with his wife. While playing Sper
ner kept his eye on each house as he passed and soon he saw the face of
his wife appear at a window in one of the houses. The face only remained for a moment and then was withdrawn. Sperner immediately went to the office of Reorder Murphy, who issued a warrant for the arrest of the woman and the man with whom she disappeared. A policeman returned to the house with Sperner to serve the
J warrants, but the couple had
peared over the back fence.
