FDEL JT DICK A NEW INVENTION THAT PUTS WOOD AND COAL IN SHADE A SUCCESSFUL TEST Was Made Under all Conditions From the Refuse of a Pulp Mill Muncie its Home. A new fuel has been invented at Muncie by a glass blower named Jacob Smith. It is said the fuel has been successfully tested and contains more heat units per pound than coal or wood. It can be manufactured and sold at a profit for half the cost of coal or wood and does not smoke except when a strong draft is used. A dispatch from Muncie says: "Its success as a fuel for domestic uses was determined several weeks ago, but not until this week, when it was used beneath an engine boiler, was its value for manufacturing demonstrated. The fuel is made largely from the refuse of the pulp mills, of which there are .a number about Muncie. Each mill turns out thousands of tons of refuse annually. The refuse, a combination of soda and lime, used in the decomposition of wood, is mixed with crude oil, and the finished product resembles putty. It may be cut with a spade and thrown into a furnace or beneath a boiler. No kindling is necessary, for a match touched to it will light it readily, the material burning with an intense heat. There are no clinkevs and the ashes remaining after the fire has burned down may be made into a new compound, for which Mr. Smith has another use. "A bushel basket ful of the fuel beneath a sixteen-horsepower engine, at a local factory, kept steam up for eight hours. It is manufactured as a plasterer makes his mortar. The Government Patent Office has called it the 'Smith fuel.' Local manufacturers are interested in the tests now I being made. ' ' HOW'S THIS? REPUBLICANS AMUSED
Over the Antics of Democratic Lead era Since Parker Sent Message. Indianapolis, July 13. Republican state managers are having a good deal of fun with certain prominent Democrats over the manner in which they have changed their position In regard to Judge Parker's famous telegram to the national convention in the last two or three days. A crowd of Democrats gathered at the Grand hotel on Saturday night, according to custom, to hear the latest returns from the convention. They were expecting no word except as to the vice presidential candidate. When the news of the telegram and the turmoil it excited reached the little party of devoted Democrats consternation reigned . supreme. This did not last long, however. Their feeling turned to one of chagrin and disgust. Remarks branding Judge Parker as anything but the wise and honest statesman he has been pictured by his ardent supporters were made and they came right from the heart. By Monday the Democrats had come to their senses, however. They realized it would never do to admit the convention had made a mistake in selecting Judge Parker. Now the same men who had so many caustic remarks to make about Alton B. Parker are busying themselves explaining that his course was the logical one for a man to take, and praising his backbone and courage. To the Republicans who knew what they had to say on Saturday evening the situation therefore is amusing to say the least. That a party of Canadian officials should find it advisable to come all the way from their country to Indianapolis to study this state's method of taxing the great railway corporations operating in the state certainly speaks well for the tax system of Indiana. Yet this is what has occurred. The state tax board began Its real work yester lay, and when the session opened it was with the Ontario commission on dailway taxation as the guests of the Indiana board. The members are here to watch the work of the board .with a view of securing new ideas to assist it in its own work. As yet the visitors have heard little to greatly interest them. The board has been hearing from private citizens who have appealed cases where they thought the county boards of review fixed their assessments too high. But the railway and interurban question will soon be reached and the foreigners will then get busy taking notes on the way the board hears its cases. The fact that it has been ultimately decided that the Filipino commissioners are not to visit Indianapolis has caused a reat deal of satisfaction to many men who were worrying over the plans for their entertainment. Not that the local people did not want the ioreigner.s to visit the city, but that at last they knew where they stand. For the last six weeks the entertainment of the commissioners ha3 been a much agitated question. Plans and counter plans for their entertainment have been discussed. Then came the hitch over the date of their arrival, which made It difficult to plan anything. In trying to find a date which would be satisfactory to all and to arrange for paying the expenses of the elaborate scheme of entertainment the real crisis came. Tho matter has now been definitely settled, however, since Secretary Ferguson has announced that Indianapolis will not be honored by the Filipinos with their presence. The Prohibition workers of this i state might give some pointers to the j leaderB of the other parties on some j subjects, and one of them is as to the ! manner of raising campaign revenues. Of course the Prohibitionists do not have the opportunities to secure large contributions that the old line parties have, but they have methods of their own which usually suffice to raise the necessary funds for their campaigns. The latest plan adopted Is to charge an admittance fee to the coming meeting; when th ecandidates for president and vice president on their ticket are to b notified of their selection to lead the party to another defeat. The admission will take the form of buying a reserved seat. Practically the greater part of the hall will be reserved and an admission of 25 cents will be charged. The proceeds will go into the campaign fund. Descendant of Daniel Boone. Denver, July 13. Suffering because she could not longer go to a drug store and procure morphine and cocaine, Delia Boone Howard, descendant of the famous Daniel Boone and at one time Denver's most famous beauty, was discovered In a hotel and removed to the county hospital. Her condition was such that she could only with difficulty talk, and it is likely she will never recover. She left Kentucky when she was young, going to San Francisco, where she married a man named Howard, a banker. A few weeks later they quarreled and Howard obtained a divorce. She went to Denver. Advocates Whipping Post. Iaporte, Ind., July 13. Alderman Emmet Scott created a sensation in the city council by advocating the establishment of a wnipping post for tramps and vagrants. He also proposes to advocate the passage by the legislature of a law providing for whipping posts in Indiana towns. The tramp question in this city has become, a burning issue, and a perplexing one with the authorities. Alderman Scott will attempt to carry his idea Into execution.
