Will Resign as Director of United States Steel Corporation. ' New York, July 2. Charles M. Schwab, who was formerly President of ' the United States Steel Corporation will resign as director of that company at the next regular meeting of the board, which will take place on the 26th of July. The report of his intention to do so was confirem today by a member of the board, who said that Mr. Schwab had notified them that he would have tendered his resignation at this month's meeting of the Directors had there been a quorum present. His resignation could only be accepted by the board of directors and a report that it had been accepted by the Finance Committee was, of course, declared to be incorrect. It is understood that Mr. Schwab's resignation is nominally due to the fact that he desires to devote more of his time to other interests which he has acquired, and, which it is said aregrowing larger. Practically, as is well known, he has devoted little or Corporation since his resignation of the Presidency thereof. A report Avas current in Wall street today that Valentine P. Snyder, President of the National Bank of Commerce, would succeed Mr. Schwab as a director of the United States Steel Corporation, but there is the highest authority for stating that neither Mr. Snyder's name nor that of any one else has been considered by the Directors. as a successor to Mr. Schwab, and will not be until Mr. Schwab's resignation is formally before the board.

Vice Admiral Kamaimura Attacked Vladivostok Squadron.

The Vladivostok squadron was reported in the Tsushima straits last night. Tokio, July 2. Vice Admiral Kamaimura evidently trapped and attacked the Russian Vladivostok squadron off the Islands of Tsu in the southern entrance to the sea of Japan last night. The result of the encounter is unknown. Liao Yan??, July 2. General Kuropatkin and General Kuroki are moving their troops like men on a chess-board. The Japanese are now twenty miles from Liao Yang. The rains are impeding their movements. Detachments totalling 1,200 men have been detailed from General Rennankampffs Cossacks to scout in the defiles and hills, harassing the Japanese and not allowing them any rest day or night. The Japanese artillery is said here to be commanded by an American. His tall form is frequently seen with the batteries. Kuroki's army is extremely active east of the Russian position and the Russians are correspondingly active. The Russian center is being rapidly pushed northward to a point where Kuropatkin established his base after the battle of Vafangow. So far as the Russians know Kuroki is steadily pushing onward through all the mountain passes, even toward Mukden. Preparations at all points are now practically complete. The demonstrations made during the last few days against the Russian left flank threaten to completely change the position of the two armies. Notwithstanding four days' rain the troops are still being moved. Some red cross trains with wounded passed northward June 30. The newspaper correspondents have returned to Liao Yang from the south. A press bureau has been established here. RAIN HAMPERS TROOFS Campaign in Upper Manchuria May Be Delayed Awhile. St. Petersburg, July 2. It is believed here that the commencement of the rainy season will materially affect the whole military situation. The authorities consider that it greatly lessens the probability of an immediate decisive engagement between Generals Kuropatkin and Kuroki, and it is thought that it will close the campaign in the upper part of the Liao Tung peninsula until good weather sets in. The Japanese will probably be forced to hold the positions where the rain finds them, as best they can. The operations around Port Arthur doubtless will be seriously hampered. It Is believed that the Japanese will find it necessary to establish another base, probably on th? west en? at of the lower part of the Liao Tung peninsula, in order to bring in food supplies, especially if the 10,000 troops reported to have been landed on the Elliott Islands be sent toward Port Arthur. The Japanese will probably be able to utilize the time in making preparations to push the siege on the resumption of fair weather. Fflug Denies Reports. St. Petersburg, July 2. Major General Pflug, telegraphing from Mukden under date of July 1, says: "The reports from foreign sources that the Japanese fleet sank several vessels of our squadron on June 23 and that our loss included Rear Admiral Prince Ouktomsky and 700 sailors are absolutely untrue." Dalin Pass Retaken. Liao Yang. July 2. General Kuropatkin with reinforcements personally moved toward Dalin pass, whereupon the pass was evacuated by the Japanese and reoccupied by the Russians. Made a Safe Return. St. fetersburg, July 2. Admiral Skrydloff reports that the Vladivostok squadron has returned to Vladivostok undamaged. The admiral confirms the bombardment of Clensan. Judge's Speech Unavailing. Cartersville, Ga., July 2. John Jones, the negro assailant of Mrs. Banister, was lynched near the scene of his crime last night. Judge A. W. Fite made a speech In an attempt to restrain th? crowd of about 200, but it was useless. The negro's body was riddled with bullets, more than 500 shots being fired Shot Baby and Himself. Enstland, Tex., July 2. James Lay shot and killed his one-year-old child and then killed himself. A target gun was the weapon used. Family trouble is assigned as the cause.
