FIRE
CRACKERS
TORPEDOES
ARE THE ONLY SAFE THINGS FOR 4th SAYS DR. DAVIS LOCKJAW CASES Are Results of Use of Toy Pistols, Etc.,' and Nearly Always are Fatal What He Says. Dr! Davis, the city health officer is of the firm opinion that only two things should be used on the Fourth of July, common Chinese firecrackers and torpedoes. The torpedoes have never been known to injure any one in any way yet, and the firecrackers are only a source of danger when some one plays with them, holds them in his hands until they explode, etc. In conversation with the Palladium Dr. Davis remarked: "As the Fourth of July approaches there comes with 1 , , -, ling and use of firearms on that day. On the last Fourth of July there occurred injuries which resulted in four hundred and thirteen cases of lockjaw. Of this number four hundred and six cases were fatal. Think of it. Four hundred and six children which caused lockjaw. This 1 J disease, which is almost incurable, results from the deeper tissues being injured by the explosion of giant crackers and more particularly the use of toy pistols, these latter being by far the most dangerous of all. No fatalities were reported from the use of torpedoes or the common crackers of usual size, therefore these are reasonably safe. But the fulminate use with the toy pistol and dynamite cartridge carries with it into the tissues the germs of tetanus, or lockjaw. Deep wounds from blank cartridges are equally dangerous. Parents therefore cannot be too careful ; in supervising tne tana 01 fireworks purchased by their children . JI. llie.V want uici'i iu fu? iuiuuj;ii i"c J?ourth sateiy. All these tnings win cause lockjaw as surely as they have caused it in the past. Firecrackers and torpedoes are safe and the child gets as much enjoyment out of them as out of the more deadly affairs.' ' "But do regular revolvers cause lockjaw as much as toy pistols?" ' ' "Well, they are only safer in having a better guard for the hand, and there is not so much liability of the 'wad' going into the flesh. The back ; oj. me trigger guaiu uj me iu,y is totally unprotected, and the trigger 'bites' the cartridge." j "Can the danger of lockjaw be eliminated by any protection for the hand t " j "No, for if the wad did go into th'e flesh, it would easily carry with it ; pieces of the glove or other protection and this would only make matters. worse. Lockjaw is not caused Dy grains of powder falling on or burn-; ing into the flesh, but only by the accidental handling of the pistol which might allow the wad to be driven straight into the hand or other part rP 4 Vi T--wrl ir va accm acq Vina CAm A of the body. Carelessness has some-1 thing to do with the getting of lock-,-jaw, "Firecrackers and torpedoes, then, are the only safe things?" "Yes." No Competition. The uniform success of ChamberIain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy in the relief and cure of bowel complaints both in children and adults has brought it into almost universal use, so that it is practically without a rival, and as everyone who has used it knows, is without an equal.
