Toklo, June 25 It Is reported that the Port Arthur fleet came out of the harbor Thursday and engaged the Japanese fleet. Tokio. June 25. Admiral Togo reports an engagement at Port Arthur last Thursday in which a battleship of the Peresviet type was sunk and a battleship of the Sevastopol type and

a nrst class cruiser oi me umua ijyw were damaged. The Japanese fleet was practically undamaged. Chefoo, June 25. Another demonstration took place off Port Arthur yesterday. Firing began from the forts about 10 a. m. and continued until 1 p. m. The program was about the same a3 on the previous day. The

Bradstreet Report Accounts for Dullness In Trade. New York, June 25. Bradstret's weekly review of .trade today says: Thero has been some enlargement In demand at the West this week, but the betterment as yet Is largely one of lone and Is predicated upon the unquestionably better crop advices received from nearly all sections. Reports from the leading industries are not significant of any particular reaction from the dullness noted heretofore. The iron trade appears to be grounding upon the bottom as regards prices, and curtailment is becoming widespread. From the leading textile industries the story is one of almost

midsummer dullness and of a waiting

disposition upon the part of manu

facturers. Prices generally, except

cotton and textiles, show few import

ant changes and really evince considerable steadiness. Railway earnings

for the elapsed portion of June prom

ise to make rather more favorable comparisons than the early spring months, while bank clearings betray Irregularity, coincident with varying influences affecting bank operations at different centers, and are below last week and last year. No particular improvement in collections is yet to be seen, and a long spell of warm weather Is still regarded as necessary if retail trade in seasonable goods is to be stimulated.

TICK ADMIRAL HEIHACHTKO TOGO. destroyers and torpedo boats pursued the same tactics and an auxiliary crui

ser lay off the islands until the firing had ceased, when it proceeded eastward at full speed. At 8:39 the same evening firing began heavily from the bluff with much activity of the search-lights, indicating the approach of torpedo craft. A little later the sound of more distant firing was heard, evidently from the land side of Port Arthur, continuing until 2:30 this morning with a brief renewal

at 5 a. m. During that period there was an almost uninterrupted thunder as of field guns and volley firing, punctuated with crashes as of siege guns. It is probable that what took place was a general shore action with a naval demonstration. It seems as though the Japanese intend to wear out the defenders by continued night activity before mak

ing a final simultaneous sea and land attack.

Sued by His Doctor. "A doctor here has sued me for

$12.50, which I claimed was excessive for a case of cholera morbus," says R. White, of Coachella, Cal. "At the trial he praised his medical skill and medicine. I asked him if it was not Chamberlain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea Remedy he used as I had good reason to believe it was, and he would not say under oath that it was not." No doctor could use a

It Is Reported That Generals Oku and Kuroki Have Combined. Liao Yang, June 25. It is reported that Generals Oku and Kuroki have Joined forces and are attacking from the direction of Vafangow. There is talk of a serious engagement shortly. It Is also rumored that the Japanese forces which were recently advancing In this direction have fallen back on

Feng Wang Cheng.

The state of tension existing may

be illustrated by the fact that the

value of the rouble fell mysteriously

at the Russo-Chinese bank. At first this was thought to be the effect of the result of the battle of Vafangow, but it was discovered later that Chi

nese from Port Arthur had declared that the fortress had been evacuated and that all of the troops had sailed

off on a number of British vessels. The valut of the rouble has now returned to the normal.

It is reported from Yin Kow that the

Japanese are recruiting a number of

Chinese bandits and are paying them good wages.

"All our earthly joys are fleeting,

The poet has truly said: "Death floats m every passing breere, - ' It lurks in every flower, Each 'season ha i its own disease,' Its perils every hour." The subject oC this brief sketch, Howard Elisha Norris, son of James and Henrietta Norris, wa born in Richmond, Iod., on Feb. 22, 137.-;, and died near Ridgef.irm, 111., on June 18th 190-!, age 26 years. '3 months

and 26 days. The deceased received his education

in his native city where lie graduated

from the KVbmoni Business College in which he received n life scholarship. Immediately after graduating he accepted a position with the Geovsre H. Knollenberg Co., of

Richmoi d, Ind. He held ihi position for five years. He came to Ridgcfarm four years ago and accepted a position with his brother-inlaw, Mr. Wm. Canaday. A year ater he entered into business for himself as a member of the firm of Richardson & Norris, dealers in dry goods and

furnishings in which he was quite successful. He was united in marriage to Miss Myrtle Hawkins on Jan. 29th, 1902, Rev. T. A. Williams officiating. Then it was thut two happy young lives ?et sail on life's deep blue sea after having received the benedictions of faithful iovincr friends. Heaven's

breezes eweetly kissed their brows and fanned and filled the sails of their happy bark. All who knew

them wished for them long life, much

happiness and a bright eventide in a ripe old age. "How transient everv earthly bliss how J.oon the moments fly." And toda.y so soon, alas so socn we must bury the husband and friend. Howard was converted some years go under the ministry of Rev. Chas. Metz and united with the M. R

church but neglectod to ira!:sttr his membership when he came to Illinois During the past year he had poken s vera! times to friends of uniting .ith the C. P. church, where

his wife belongs. As to his sickness and rapid detcline all have knowledge. He was of a happy and hopeful nature, never complaining but bear

ing all with a heroic Christian fortitude. He oftimes expressed himself as fully trusting Jesus for the future and in thi faith passed away with a

smile on hi emaciated face. Besides his parents above named he leaves one brother and two sisters two brothers and one sister having died in infancy. The living are: Joseph Norris and Mrs. C. A. Brenm of Richrac-i'd, Intl., and Mrs. William Canaday of Richester, Ind. The life that is most sorely crushed and bleeding today is the faithful loving wife who faithful and true in health, laid

herself wholly on the altar for service

when affliction came. Besides those

named above he leaves many friends who admired his noble generous nature and many virtues as a citizen and in business life, and who deplore his eaiiv death.
