AN ABLE JUDGE

Conscientious Devotion to Duty Has Characterized Indiana Jurist. John V. Hadley was born on a farm in Hendricks county, Indiana, Oct. 31, 1843. He left Butler University In 1861, at the close of his sophomore year, and joined the army as a private in the Seventh Indiana Infantry. He was wounded in the second battle of Bull Run August 29, 1862. In November, 1862, he was promoted from the ranks to a first lieutenancy, and was shortly thereafter detailed on the staff of General James C. Rice. He was again seriously wounded at the Battle of the Wilderness, May 5, 1864, and left upon the field as mortally injured. He was afterward conveyed by the enemy to a Confederate field hospital, from which hospital he escaped, but after two days' efforts in trying to gain the Union lines was recaptured and sent south, and was a prisoner at Macon and Savannah, Ga and Charleston and Columbia, S. C, JOHN V. HADLEY. from which latter place he escaped on the 4th day of November, 1864, with three others and successfully entered the Union lines at Knoxville, Tenn., Dec. 10, 1864. An account of this exploit was published by Charles Scribner's Sons in 1S98 in a neat volume of the Ivory Series entitled "Seven Months a Prisoner," the dedication of which volume is to his mother in these words: "To the memory of my widowed mother, who bore the chief burden of sorrow while the events chronicled herein were passing, this volume is affectionately inscribed." Judge Hadley was discharged from the army in 1865, and upon his return to civil life at once began the study of law. He was admitted to the bar in June, 1866, married and settled in Danville.' He continued practicing his profession in that city until the fall of 1888, when he was elected to the circuit bench of Marion and Hendricks counties. Upon the division of the circuit he was re-elected to the Hendricks Circuit Bench in 1894, and from that to the Supreme Bench in 1898. His service on the Supreme Bench has been characterized by a spirit of conscientious devotion to duty. Judge Hadley has demonstrated unusual legal ability and the possession of the judicial temperament, and has won the confidence and esteem of all those having to do with the affairs of the Supreme Court. CORDIALLY APPROVED. Prohibition State Convention Makes a Hit With Organ of Liquor Trade. "Our Standard," the organ of the local retail liquor dealers' associac tion of Indiana, gives its cordial endorsement to the work accomplished by the recent state convention of Prohibitionists in Indiana. In its issue of April 25 "Our Standard" says: "The editor of Our Standard has frequently asserted that no conscientious saloon keeper can honestly object to the methods employed by the Prohibition party in Indiana. A great many condemn because they do not understand. "The recent convention of the Prohibitionists of this State passed resolutions that with a little pruning will look well on the minutes of every liquor dealers' meeting in this State. That party goes on record as endorsing the very statements made by the editor of Our Standard to the temperance committee of the legislature that passed the Nicholson bill in '95. "The sentiment expressed in the platform of the Prohibition convention should be an incentive to the liquor men to get in line for their own protection and defense." An Admirable Candidate. Hon. Frank Hanly is an admirable oandidate tor governor. He is a man of clean character, sterling worth and splendid ability, a man who came up from the humbler walks of life by dint of hard work and unfaltering energy. He is a man of the people and in thorough sympathy with those who toil whether in fields, shops or factories, and as governor it may be depended upon that no class will receive aught but the kindest consideration and fairest treatment at his hands. Middletown News. Most of the newspapers pretending to represent the reorganizers are now saying and repeating the statement that the Democratic party would be better off if W. J. Bryan would leave It. A queer thing about this is that it is offered by the element that did leave the Democratic party and now pretend that they have come back to it, not as penitents, but as blistering braggarts who, in the classic phrase of the times, assume to be "the whole thing." A more impudent exhibition has never been seen in the history of politics, and the history of politics Is filled with a great many presumptlous things.

Mrs. Ernest Reid of Richmond was here over Sunday visiting parents, and friends. Mrs. Kate Schooley visited her friend, Mrs. Emma Myers, of Germantown over Sunday. Mrs. Sarah Gilmore of Richmond has been the guest of her friend, Mrs. Dr. Day for several days. Miss Nellie Graves accompanied Mrs. Hortense Ellabarger to St. Louis last week. Mrs. Ellabarger had been here on quite a visit. Mrs. Nellie Lamb of California has been here and other places for a month visiting her mother and many other friends. Mrs. Stella Cranor from near Economy is here visiting her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Bushman and a host of old friends. Frank Ervin went to Indianapolis Saturday to see a cousin who is quite sick with typhoid fever. Miss Lora Henley went to Richmond Saturday and remained over Sunday. A strawberry and ice cream festival was had at the Christian church Saturday evening on which occasion everything was better than was expected. Everything was sold out by ten o'clock. E. G. Moore's new house is a somewhat new style or pattern for Dublin. It is now assuming a shape which no doubt is an up-to-date one. Mrs. Dr. Lizzie Mitchell and child of Everton, Ind., were here recently visiting her parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Mitchell and many other old friends and neighbors. Frank Oler who has been in the grasp of typhoid fever for several weeks, is rapidly recovering. Mrs. Martha Canutt, two and a half miles southwest of town, has brought her demented son, Harry, home for a short stay from Easthaven, as it is her custom to bring him home for a month or more every summer. While here she has to employ a man to take charge of him all the time, as he would not be safe in many respects. We will simply say that the present prospects for an abundant yield of everything, with but little exception, has never been better at this season of the year.
