The feature of the exhibition at the Garfield building is the display made by the local artists, under the charge of Mr. Girardin, vho has arranged one of the best exhibits of the "Richmond Art Club" ever seen in this city. The club has this year included the work of two additional Richmond painters, Miss Anna Newman and Miss Ada Robinson, whose pictures are hung in the corridor and which makes one of the most attractive and interesting showings seen this season. Miss Anna Newman makes a comprehensive exhibit of the results attained in a several years' course of conscientious study at the Chicago Art Institute, her successes having been mentioned at length in the Palladium from time to time, her excellence of drauhtmanship having been emphasized heretofore. She shows a large number of "honorable mentions" won in competition with great numbers of students; some virile studies in oil; and a number of fine examples of her work in the medium of water-color, several of these most
admirable in ensemble, " Serious i
Thoughts," a study of a young woman in a yellow gown, and "Girl in Red Dress." being stunning in effect, whil.i "An Old Gentleman," a character study, wonderfully handled, is po-haps, the most representat ive bit of her art. Miss Ada Robinson, a young art
ist, hitherto unknown to the
public, has six canvases on exhibit, two still life studies, and four figure, two of these portraits, all painted from life. Miss Robinson, who has
had no instruction save three lessons at one lime from Miss Florence Chandlee, displays remarkable native gifts and wonderful intuitive knowledge of the essential technical qualities, her freedom of brush-work, clear, pure use of color, breadth of handling, and facility for securing a "likeness" in portraiture, making
"Richmond Sketch Club," in 1874, of which the present "Richmond Art Club," is the outcome, has symt this year four pictures and several less pretentious sketches. One of them a marine, "The Pilot Boat," is a cleverly handled bit of water and sky, but his other three pieces are re

usual charm, one, "Early Spring," not surpassed in this exhibition for tender feeling and poetic fancy. This in color, composition and , treatment is one of the best things Mr. Nordyke has yet done, and is. aside from the painter, a delightful picture, in and of itself, and an admirable translation of a bit of Nature. "The De
serted Cabin," is, however, regarded equally as successful as the former picture, the translucence of atmospheric effect, the fine gradations of color, the restraint exhibited in the handling of the immediate foreground going to make a harmonious ensemble, the subject, homely but appealing, befitting the setting. "The Old Woolen Mill," is another view of Test's old mill south of town, which, with its environs, has made that localitv an artist's paradise. Mr. Nor
dyke, while not exhibiting often outside Of Richmond, is one of the best of our local artists and his steady advance in his art is noticeable in this year's showing. As before mentioned, Mr. Nordyke is represented in the
Indiana liuilding at the World's Fair. Mr. W. A. Holly's four little canvr.ses will delight his friends and all true lovers of art, his surprising progression in artistic endeavor being pointedly manifest in these pictures. No better or more charming picture, in its way, than his "Giay Morning,"
local .is shown at the exhibition, its refine
ment of sentiment, its delicious atmosphere, its direct yet sympathetic treatment, making it notable, the subject, a cornfield in autumn, with an overcast sky, being striking in simplicity. Tn "A Winter Afternoon," the handling of light and shadow and the remarkable effects achieved in the use of color, as well as the unique composition, seize the eye. Mr. Carl Lieber, the well known art dealer and critic of Indianapolis, greatly admired Mr. Holly's work when he first saw it last year, predicting a future for Mr. Holly if he but had the time to devote to his art.

Mr. Mote also shows a pastel of little Dorothy Bill, which attracts in its delicacy of coloring, and in addition several interesting landscapes and one ilower piece. i Mr. A. W. Gregg, who paints during leisure hours as an agreeable pastime, can not be too highly commended for his attempt at genre, "The Young Wagon-Maker," which is as-' tonishingly successful. The subject is the interior of Mr. Frank Keh-' lenbrink's shop on Eighth and south. E street, and shows a boy at work in
construction. Mr. Gregg has made very few mistakes in this ambitious canvas and bids fair to excel in por-j fraying pictures of this character.More attractive even is his large still-life, "The Old Library Table,", which for textural effects attained," especially in the books, the red cover, and the brass candlestick, is a remarkable achievement. His three oilier pieces shown are interesting but undoubtedly the "Old Library Table" is his most successful piece
of work so far. Mr. Ellwood Morris in the four small canvases from his brush, dis-
