I. E. HEARST

CANCELS LEASE

For 150 Rooms in the Planters' Hote Tor Delegates.

St. Louis, May 30. William R Hearst has given up the three floors

aggregating 150 rooms, that he had engaged at the Planters' Hotel, for the week of the Democratic national convention. Andrew M. Lawrence, one of Mi Hearst's representatives in Chicago, telegraphed to the Planters' management yesterday canceling1 the contract. Six weeks ago or thereabouts Mr.

Hearst's agents started in to buy up

all the available hotel space in the

World's Fair Citv for the conven

tion season. They couldn't get enough their limit being reached only through

refusal of the tavern keepers to sac

rifice the interests of other patrons to their demands. That, however, was when the Hearst boom was at its zenith before Indiana, Wisconsin, Ohio and other states where hopes had been staked high, had spoken. It would have cost the candidate a pretty penny for every day the rooms were at his disposal, but inasmuch as his campaign has been marked by a most prodigal outpouring of cash, that would excite little surprise. The cancellation of the contract, however, followed the customary request of the hotel management for a part payment as earnest money, indicating a

feeling in the Hearst camp that the expenditure would not be warranted

by the probable results of the convention. But the Hearst agents insist that the candidate is not getting "cold feet," and that it is foolish too think for a minute that he will withdraw from -the contest. James O'Shaughnessy, secretary of the William Randolph Hearst League, said last night: "I have not been advised as to the cancellation of the Planters '.contract but if the rooms there have been given up I suppose it is because arrangements have been made for reservations at the new Jefferson hotel, which will be the headquarters of the national committee and is located close to the convention hall." Mr. Hearst has engaged ninety-two rooms at the Jefferson hotel, but made his contract for them at the same time the three floors at the Planters' were engaged. At the same time, also when the situation was different the Hearst tigent tried to rent a whole floor at the Southern.

The recorder's, treasurer's and auditor's offices were closed all day. Shiveley and Shiveley filed the suit of Anna W. Williams et al., vs. David F. White, on partition to quiet t'1le to estate.

Daniel Williams, by his attorrey,

H. U. Johnson, filed complaint for a writ of habeas corpus to obtain ms tody of his two children. The nlatter was brought before Judge Fox who ordered the children brought into court tomorrow. A petition was filed by Clement W Ferguson, guardian, asking court tc grant privilege of using money belonging to the Abram Phillips estate for the improvement of the Phillips

opera house.

Mending Amber. To mend amber- requires a certain amount of care, though the process is a simple one. Apply some linseed oil to the broken edges, and then hold the oiled parts over a gas jet, covering the rest of the amber meanwhile with a cloth. As soon as the oiled parts become sticky with, the heat press the edges which are to be united together and hold them very carefully till cold.
