The Ladies' Aid Society of Grace M. E. church held a very pleasant afternoon meeting yesterday at the home of Mrs. Mary Whitridge, on south Eighth street. About fifty members were present and a pleasant afternoon was spent. The first part of the session was devoted to the transaction of business and to a discussion of the work of the society. After the business matters were over the members enjoyed a social time. Mrs. Hadley and Miss Blanche Cunningham rendered several excellent musical selections which were well received. Light refreshments were served at the close of the social hour. The Ladies' Aid Society of the First Presbyterian church held a meeting yesterday afternoon in the parlors of the church. Quite a number of members were present. Business matters were discussed during the first part of the afternoon, while the remainder of the time was devoted to a social hour. The past work of the society was reviewed during the business session and plans for future work laid.

MODES OF THE MOMENT. Delft blue is one of the leading shades in millinery. Bronze and blue is a stylish and effective combination. Shepherd's plaids seem to increase in popularity for walking suits. At present drop skirts are made to fit Rmnnihlv over the bins and with a
high, very wide flounce. The prettiest of the new fancy collars are made of lace embroidered or of Louis XVI. embroideries in softest linen. Guipure, coarse lace embroidered in gold thread and Tenerife lace motifs on black velvet are preferred trimmings for shangtung silk coats. Girdles made of chains in a dull gold, with military ornaments at the back and in front finished with chased balls, are worn with the newest tea gowns. The prettiest simple waists shown this spring are of cream colored point d'esprit, made almost without trimming except a touch of lace or handmade collar and cuffs.
By far the largest crowd of the
week assembled last night at the ear-
nival to do justice to the first good
evening that the weather man gav.
As early as half past six long lines of people were awaiting outside the

and these lines were re-enforced by crowds which came on every car. As soon as the gates were opened the
crowd poured through and the carnival grounds were soon filled to overflowing. For at least an hour a steady stream poured through the gates until the grounds inside were filled with a great mass of people. For the first time this week also the carnival company and the Red Men made money. It was bitter gall indeed to the Red Men to see, by the huge crowd that was there last evening, just how much money they had ost by the inclemency of the weather the eai'lier part of the wreek. The booths were well patronized, the Ferris wheel was kept going all the time with its large loads and the shows, all of them, were crowded to the doors with people. "Maamie" and "Humpty-Dumpty" and the "Animal Arena" seem to draw the largest crowds. On the platforms of these three shows large numbers of people were waiting all the time to rush in after each performance and secure seats for the next. The remainder of the shows also did very well and the carnival managers and the Red Men express themselves greatly pleased with the attendance both at . the carnival
grounds and the shows. Yesterday afternoon the ciowd, composed of mostly women and children, was not so large but, as a Red Man said, two such attendances every day would
put everyone connected with the affaii on easy street for a considerable period. Speedy 's high dive attracted a great deal of attention and" a largo per centage of the crowd stayed until late in order not to miss it. It has been authoritatively denied that the carnival company will stay here next week for the first three days, as they have an engagement at Marion. It is not known exactly how the Red Men will come out but it is probable that they will make expenses if the crowds this afternoon and evening are as large as those of yesterday. The rumor that the carnival woukl stay here part of next week sprang from good authority but on account of the inability to cancel their engagement the carnival managers will leave tomorrow for Marion. The crowd tonight ought to be one
of the largest of the season. The
weather is fine and the carnival will
be at its best.

Richard Mansfield has got a new manager. lie has had about a dozen since he became a star. Hereafter it is said that William Gillette, who is quite a rich man, will only play twenty weeks in each season. Robert Lorraine is the latest star to burst forth. William A. Brady is at present making arrangements to star the actor in a new romantic drama. Mrs. J. U. Gilbert started on the stage, where she has been seventy years, as a dancer. .From dancing between the acts of plays she graduated Into speaking parts.
Josephine Cohan of the Four Cohans
is to star next season in a musical
comedy to be called "The Leading
Lady." But doesn't a star actress feel
insulted if called a "leading lady?" As might be supposed, the play
