Through the courtesy of Mr. Timothy Nicholson, the Palladium was furnished an advance copy of the Fourteenth Annual Report of the Board of State Charities. This is quite a volumionus report, embracing 275 pages in all. Indiana has become famous for her work in systematic charities. There are thirteen state institutions that come under the general supervision of the Board of State Charities. They include the hospitals for the insane. Soldiers' Home at LaFayette, Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphans' Home at Knightstown, institutions for the deaf and dumb, blind, feeble minded youth, state prison, state reformatory, reform school for boys and the school and prison for girls and women at Indianapolis. The general supervision of the board is not limited to the above named institutions but extends to county jails, pauper asylums, orphans' homes, etc. Some of the interesting features of the report are: (1) every one of the state institutions has a balance left in its treasury that is the expenditures were less than the appropriation. (2) In ten years from 1890 to 1900, the increase in the number of inmates in the state institutions has been from 5400 to SS39, or an increase of 03 per cent. During these ten years the state has increased in population only 14 per cent. There are many other interesting features about the report that space will not permit the mention of here. This report speaks for the great state of Indiana as one of the foremost states in the Union in taking care of the unfortunate. Her thirteen great institutions are monuments of love and protection for the criminal, insane, incorrigible, feeble-minded and poor. They reflect great credit on tbe people of our great eommomvealth.
