Old Glory Now Waves Over the Former French Canal Works. INTERESTING CEREMONY United States final Commission Takes Formal Possession of the Panama Canal Iloute. The French Representative Made oCeremonious Delivery of All the Property. Panama, May 5. The United States canal commission has taken formal possession of the Panama canal route. From now on tne canal works will be under the direction of Lieutenant JOHX BARRETT, UNITED STATED MINISTER TO PANAMA. Mark Brooke of the engineer corps of i the United States army, who represented the cnal commission at the ceremony of the transfer. Immediately after the transfer the United States flag was hoisted over the legation and over the canal offices In the cathedral plaza. M. Renaudin, the representative of the Panama Canal company, called the principal employes of the company to his office and read them a cable dispatch from Paris, ordering him to deliver all the canal property to the United States government. Lieutenant Brooke read a telegraphic message from Secretary Taft directing him to accept the property for the government of the United States. M. Renaudin then handed tho keys of the buildings to Lieutenant Brooke, who hoisted the American flag over the administration building. A document attesting the delivery of the property, written in French, Spanish and English, was signed by Lieutenant Brooke and M. Renaudin. Cattle killed by Lightning. Boonville, Ind., May 5. During an electrical storm in this county which was accompanied by hail, barns belonging to Daniel McKenney and Eli Boardman were struck by lightning and the structures with their contents were consumed.
