Discovered in a Mexican Curio Store
By an American. (Mexican Herald.)
A codex which disappeared many years ago from the National Museum
was found day before yesterday at a
curio store on Coliseo Nuevo street,
and was recovered by the authorities
It happened that an American en
tered the store to look for curiosities,
and amon other things was shown
the codex, whose value he immediately appreciated. Asking how much it was worth, he was told $15,000. The
American knew that a codex disap
peared from the museum many years ago, and fit once imagined this was the one. He asked how it came to be in the shop, and the owner of the place said that it did not belong to
him, but was there to be sold on com mission.
The American in question reported this fact to the director of the mu
seum, and yesterday afternoon a party formed'by the American, the direc
tor of the museum and the judicial authorities proceeded to the curio shop and drew up an acta, as the beginning of the investigations that are to be madf. The owner of the place said that Hipolito Ramirez had taken
the codex to be sold on commission. Mr. Ramirez is the son of Ferdinando Ramirez, -vho was director of the museum many years ago. It is said that during the time of the French intervention Manuel Orozco y Berra, fearing that some important documents and other objects might be stolen from the museum, moved them to a room in the Mining Palace. When things became quiet again and the national government was reinstated these documents and things were moved back to the museum. However, it was found that part of the roof had fallen and the ruins had spoiled some of the docu
ments. Tt Avas found also that some of the latter were missing, although it was difficult to say which, as no inventory had been made. Investigations are to be made to find out how Mr. Ramirez come to be in possession of this valuable codex, which is supposed to consist of the plans and maps of the route followed by the Aztecs on their pilsrimage from north to south, when looking for the traditional eagle and serpent.
PHILIPPINE FORESTS. ( Arboriculture. ) Surveys have progressed far enough in th? Philippines to furnish a considerable amount of information of value to those who are contemplating operating in the timber of those islands. In the various islands there are estimated to be fully 50,000,000 acres that will average 30,000 feet to the acre. That is quite a bunch of timber a thousand and a half billion feet. One thing that operators should bear in mind, however, is that there are no forests of one variety. Already fG5 differeit woods have been classified and from a dozen to fifty varieties grow on a single acre. It is seldom that more- than four or five trees of one kind will be grouped together, thus making it impracticable to handle any one kind of timber. San Francisco Call. In all tropical regions there are large numbers of trees, vines, and shrubs of no value from a lumber or economic point of view. This one fact, as given by the Call, that 605 varieties of wood growth have been classified, and that from a dozen to fifty kinds grow upon a single arce and which corresponds with other tropic regions, makes the subject of lumbering in that country a precarious operation. In hot, moist countries the roads are impassable for a large part of the
year, and, except immediately on the coast, the operations of the lumber men are very costly. Where forests are dense with one Kind of timber, as in the Redwood district of California, or the Yellow Pine regions of the south, or the White Pine forests of our Northern States, timbermen can profitably build railways to bring out the logs and lumber.. Not so in that scattered timber belts of the tropics. It won't payThe Philippines is a good place to send specialists at expense of the Government, but will never be a place where American capital will find profitable investment so long as any timber remains on this continent.
The dredge, which will be used to dig the Ambrose channel in constructed on the line of a steamship and is 28S feet long. It is of the twin-screw type, but in the place of a hold has two hoppers, one forward and one aft, into which the sand from the bottom of the bay can be drawn. On either side of the vessel about midship, are 20-inch suction pipes SO feet" long.
