MX7ERAT, Lessee and Manager Monday, April 4 SOCIETY'S GALA NIGHT First appearance In this city of the bright and highly successful star KATHERINE WILLARD In Edward C. White's gorgeous production of Theodore Kremer's most successful romantic drama THE POWER BEHIND THE THRONE Supported by an excellent company of 2S artists .... A magnificent scenic production Presented with elaborate costumes GUAR AN rEED- ATTRACTION In its fourth year of success a triumph wherever presented. PRICES 25c, 50c, 75c, $1; box seats $1.50 Sale seats opens at Nixon's Confection ery, 808 Main, Friday, April ist. Few theatrical offerings of the last few years have been as successful as Theodore Kremer's fine romantic drama, "The Power Behind the Throne' as produced by Edward C. White, vnth Katherine Willard as the star. The play itself is of undisputed inherent strength, with picturesque scenes and strong climaxes. When these are enhanced by beautiful scenery, rich and historical correct costumes, novel electrical effects and interpreted by actors who can act, the result is a production which is at once artistic and pleasing. The management of the Gennett theater has secured tLis strong attraction for the evening of Monday, April 4, and it is promised that it will be one of the best attractions of the present season. No expense has been spared by the management to have every detail of the performance on a high plane, and the work of Miss Willard is almost too well known to require commendation. BY REQUEST. Some time ago, the American Type Founders Company printed, in one of its specimens, the opening verses of the poem below. Something therein appealing to the printers (probably Grand Army Men or their descendants), numerous inquiries regarding authorship, and requests for the complete poem were received. The words, by Horace Eaton Walker, were published in his "Lady of Dardale and Other Poems,' ' in 1886. This author, having had limited educational advantages, was compelled to eke out a quite precarious existence, and most of his works were composed while he was attending a slasher in a cotton will. The Old Canteen.
I tell you, Jim, it ain't no use, A soldier can't forget, Those bloody scenes are just as fresh As on the day we 'met; But all the relics of the war, The broken sword, I ween, E'en knapsack old, there is none like The dear old tin canteen. You recollect as welf as I The hunger and the thirst, The mad career of horse and men, Where rebel shells had burst; But after all, you gray old vet., The best remembered scene Was when we stole a chance to drink From out the old canteen. I know, as well as any man That wore the blue or gray, That war is hardship, e'en at best, Tho' victory crown the day; But yet, dear Jim, you gray old bat, You know the freshest scene Was when you drank the last dear drop . From out the old canteen. We were in Libby! Yes, dear Jim, We were among the first, And Marathon, Thermopylae, The bloody wars of erst, Knew not the woe of rebel pens, The guard of haughty mien, But even there did we forget To love the old canteen? Oh, yes, I know, the bit of rice, The hoe-cake and the corn, Like orient viands seemed to us From dear old Plenty's horn; But still, you one-legged, gray-haired Jim, No memory is so green, As wrhen we risked our lives to kiss The lips of that canteen. But in the dust together lie The boys in blue and gray, The war is but a memory gone Of that eventful Day; But as we wander 'mid their graves Where willows softly lean, We dimly see, thro' veiling tears, That holy old canteen. And while we bow above the braves, That death, dear Jim, made one, We must forget there ever was A battle fought and won; But if we cherish in our hearts Some dear and holy scene, Don't let the hallowed memory go Of that old tin canteen. George Madden Martin is her own name and she does not like to have it mistaken for her husband's name or for a pseudonym. The Amer ican public now understand this, but the English public, which has been recently introduced to "Emmy Lou," rioes not. The Pall Mall Gazette, in a recent review of "Emmy Lou," says ingenuously " George Madden Martin indeed knows so much about little girls that we cannot help suspecting that femininity is concealed behind the masculine nom de jnierre, LOW FARES TO WINONA LAKE.
