EASTER. (Continued from second page.) Thomas a Kempis "Imitation of Christ." Who can tell? Some have walked into Christ and talked with Ilirn, and ilieir hour's have burned within them, hut their eyes Ave re holdcn that ihev should not know Ifim. I am reminded of CJeorye Kliot 's o-ra ml neighbor, Avho lived just around the corner, Thomas Carlyle. lie said: "Man, is, properly siKalun;jr, based upon hope. lie lias no other possession but bono. This world of his is emphatically the place of hope." As Carlyle sits in bronze on the great embankment, with a pi 1 0 of books under his chair, looking out on London, lie seemed to me to he Avniting for spring Availing" "until the day break and the shadows flee away." "Then long eternity shall greet our bliss "With an individual kiss." So John Milton harked forward. Shelley Avas infidel as to the state of his time and the church of h time, but read his "Song to the Sky Lark" and "The Sensitive Plant." These ar-. some Avords of his: "For love and beauty and delight there is no death nor change." Two days before death Socrates said: "If death be a removal from here to another place, and if all the dead are there, Avhat greater blessing can there be than this, my judges? I go to meet them and to converse with them and get acquainted with all the gre it men that have been the glory of the past and that have died by the unjust sentence of their time." Xo one I have mentioned has a surer grip of the future than Sweden-

borg. lie is Avriting up Avhat some of us call "'he undiscovered country." TTe says: "There are societies therewhose employments are to take care of infants. There are other societies Avhose employments are to instruct and educate boys and gills. All and each are co-ordinated and subordinated according- to Divine order and, taken tog-ether, make and perfect Hie general use, Avhich is the general irood." myrox kfj:d.

APPARATUS For Use in Hip Diseases Invented By Hospital Interne. Dr. IIoAvard Johnson., an imerne at the City Hospital, has by an ingeni

ous invention revol itionized ol methods of orthopedic surgery. The ma

chine, or contrivance, modified by Superintendent Fehrenbatch, avt.s yesterday pu; into practical use at tlic

institution, and Dr. Albeit lYeiberg

a member of the staff, and an authority on this class of surgery, pronounces the device as the best in this country and abroad. ..The contrivance is an apparatus to orerconio deformity in rip disease. Heretofore in cases of tubercular hip disease the patient was placed in bed Avith leg raised and extended, Ave'ghts being" attached to the font, the leg resting on pillows or improvised apparatus, to overcome the deformity. This apparatus Avas defective in that it did not afford perfect control of the patieni and his limb. The apparatus invented by Dr. Howard Johnson is mechanically perfect, consisting of an upright piece of angle iron nine inches AiV and four feet long, and an inclined plane of Avood and steel

rods to ti e center of the bed. On tin's inclined plane, the patient's leg rests. Fly means of surgeon's plastei cords are attached to (lie patient's leg, and t'lese cords pass over a pulley on the upright piece toAvard the floor. Avhere the proper Aveights are it t ached. The pnl'ey is so arranged that it can b moved from side to side or up nid down as the angle of deformity in the limb is overcome. The ingenious machine also controls every movement of the patient. Its superiority over the clumsy makeshifts that have been in use is that it consists of two piece-- instead of five, and it is part of ihe bed, making the control of the patient absolute and also Avith one adjustment all of the deformity can be overcome.
