Has Been Reached by the Wabash River at the Yincennes Gauge. SERIOUS LEVEE BREAK Many Houses Washed From Their Foundations and Much Livestock Perishes in Flood. Thousands of Acres Inundated and the Damage Will toe Enormous. VIncennes, Ind., March 31. The Wabash river here has reached a mark of twenty-three feet, which equals the highest in its history. The most serious of many breaks in the levee occurred near Belgrade landing, eight miles north of here, on the Illinois side The break occurred In a bend In the river, the water rushing through with great speed. Many houses were washed from their foundations and much livestock was drowned. The water washed through Westport, putting the water to the second stories. The flood is still rising in the little town and doing enormous damage In Lawrence county, two-thirds of which is now under water. In -many places the water is twenty feet deep. The B. & O. S. W. tracks between here and Lawrence ville. 111., are being washed out because of the levee breaking. The long trestle, two miles west of here, is in a dangerous position and may be washed out. If it should go the loss to the B. & O. S. W. will be thousands of dollars. DEMANDS OF MINERS They Make Several at Joint Conference Begun at Terre Haute. Terre Haute, Ind., March 31. The joint conference of Indiana operators and miners has been resumed with nearly 200 delegates present. The discussion opened at once on several demands made by the miners. One Is for a reduction in the price of powder from $1.75 to $1.50 a keg, the miners agreeing as heretofore to buy only from operators A demand is made for a reduction In the charges made by operators for blacksmithing in machine mines. It is also demanded that the engineers and other day labor have the benefit of the eight-hour day. President-elect Boyle saying that the public has been led to believe the eight-hour day prevails, whereas it does not, as to a large number of men at the mine. Press Association Committee. South Bend, Ind., March 31. John B. Stoll, president of the Indiana Press association, has announced the selection of an executive committee: Frank Singleton, of Martinsville, chairman; S. N. Cragun, Lebanon; Benjamin F. Louthain, Logansport, and Benjamin F. AricKey,' of Lebanon. The first meeting of the association will be held at St. Louis during the world's fair, or else at Winnipeg during the Canadian tour. The association has been invited to nold a winter meeting at Gulfport, Miss. Echo of Purdue Wreck. Lafayette, Ind., March 31. Harry Adams, of Frankfort, who played on the Purdue football team and was a victim of the wreck at Indianapolis last October, has received $1,200 from the Big Four Railroad company and all expenses from the time of the accident until he was able to return to school. He was injured about the head and side. A number of other claims have been sent to the company, which have not been settled. Strange Lapse of Memory. Anderson, Ind., March 31. L. H. Vinnedge, In the charge , of Chief of Police Robins, has arrived here. He asserts that he knows nothing about the drawing of a check for $5,000 and also affirms that his mind has been a blank since he left Anderson. He said he did not even know he was in New Orleans until he read in the newspapers an account of his being lost. After giving a bond for $2,500, he was allowed to go to his home. "The Pace That Kills." Brazil, Ind., March 31. Tenny P. Lewis, joint representative for the counties of Clay and Owen, has been transferred to the Indiana reformatory at Jeffersonville, to serve an indeterminate sentence for embezzling $647 from the local union of the United Mine Workers, while serving as secretary. His downfall is attributed to the environments marking his service in the legislature at Indianapolis. Capital City Out of Gas. Indianapolis, March 31. The natural gas supply of the Consumers' Gas trust will be turned off at midnight. At present the company has about one ounce of pressure at the city limits. Of the 1,000 remaining consumers not more than 500 have enough gas to light. The shutting off of gas is In accordance with a resolution adopted by the directors. Aged Woman Burned to Death. Bloomington, Ind., March 31. Rebecca Pellls, an inmate of the county infirmary for twenty years, was burned to death, her clothing catching Are from an open grate.
