His management has surrounded him by not only the strongest company of romantic actors on the American stage but has given his new play "The Light of Other Days," an en vironment which for pictorial and historical illustration has never been equalled by other than a spectacular production. Mr. Mantell 's abilities as a star are too well known to require expatiation, while his latest success is said to be the best play in which he has ever been seen. The Phillips will be crowded on Monday evening to see the "Dainty Paree Burlesquers" who "made good" here early in the season. The company is much stronger than when it first visited the city and those who enjoyed the many good features presented know just Iioav the Dainty Parisians caused dull care to vanish and "delivered the goods" in the way of presenting something in the field of burlesque. Krwas Senator "Needed the Money, He Said. St. Louis, March 26. Previous to the defense resting its. case last evening, United States Senator Joseph Ralph Burton, of Kansas, took the SENATOR JOSEPH K. BTJBTON OP KANSAS. stand in his own behalf, in connection with the charge of having illegally accepted fees from the Rialto Grain and Securities company, of St. Louis. When he nad concluded he was excused from the stand without cross examination by the government. Senator Burton testified that he had accepted the offer of the Rialto company to act as its general counsel because he had lost heavily in a financial panic and needed the $500 a month for which his contract called. "I was assured by the company," he said, "that my services would not be needed in Washington in any capacity. It was explained that Major Dennis, president of the Rialto company, become involved in trouble growing out of the operations of the Brooks Brokerage company and that part of my duties would be to defend him in any criminal action that would be brought against him. The Rialto company was also to have the use of my name and my services were to have been used in connection with a securities department of the Rialto company which at that tirto was projected." Conservative estimates of the damage caused by the flooded rivers and creeks of lower Michigan during the past twenty-four hours, place the property loss at more than $1,000,000. At Lansing alone, the figures are placed at $200,000. Two lives have been lost those of an unknown Armenian who was standing on a bridge at Lansing when it collapsed and was washed away and a boy who was drowned in a flooded street at Owosso.
