London, March 17. No further news of the progress of hostilities in the far East has been received here. There is much interest manifested in the report that the Russian mala advance is crossing the Yalu, but this lfJLKQUIS IWAO OTA MA, JAFAJi 8 CHIEF O STAFF. is not yet confirmed, and. according to a Ping Yang correspondent, all the Russian troops have left North Korea, 20,000 of them being concentrated at Kulion Chang, north of the Yalu river, in Manchuria. A Sebastopol correspondent says it Is semiofficially announced that Russia has abandoned the idea of sending her Baltic squadron to the far East by the way of Behring straits as impracticable. A Port Arthur dispatch says that Admiral Wittsoeft has been appointed chief of Viceroy Alexieff's naval staff and has gone to Mukden. A Tokio correspondent cables that the latest reports say the Russians are occupying an area having a forty-mile base from Wiju to Chang Tong and extending south to the Pakchon river. IN MANCHURIA The' Movements of Trcops Deing Conducted Quietly. Yin Kow, March 17. The only re liable reports at the present moment from the main Manchurian cities show a quiet movement along the railway and such cities as Mukden which are oH the main line are undisturbed. The people here are not in possession of definite news of outside events. The chief movement on the Fung Huang Cheng military road is the dispatch of riders to and from the Russian advance forces. A creditable native has arrived here bringing a report as late as March 12 from Song Huang Cheng to the effect that the main body of the concentrated forces had crossed the Yalu. leaving small bodies of troops at Antang and other points to g:ianl the river. A fortnight ago a few .spies visited Antung, but since then no Japnncro havs been seen west of the Yalu. The continued attacks of the Japanese have compelled the steady occupation of the I-iao Tong penin.ila. The la3t bombardment of Port Arthur rendered every part of the fortress at Port Arthur unsafe. Residents assert that the fragments of Japanese shells fell everywhere and that some railway coaches and buildings were destroyed though most of the damage on the share was unimportant. Foreigner choosing to remain in the interior must now sign an agreement restricting their movements and stipulating that a special pass is necesary when leaving their bounds. Stark Loses his Job. St. Petersburg, March 17. Official orders have been published relieving Vice-Admiral Stark from tho command of the Port Arthur division of the navy, ostensibly on accj'int of illness. No successor will be appointed, Vice-Admiral Makaroff having determined to serve as squadron commander as well as commander-in-chief of the entire Russian naval force in the far East. ! More Woe for Korea. Seoul, March 17. The Korean sup rintendent cf trade has received a note from tHe general Tn commaTKr at Vladivostok, saying that since Korea has Joined Japan, Russia considers Korea as belligerent and will act accordingly.

A Long Trip Around. St. Petersburg, March 17. The idea of the Russian Baltic squadron going to the far East by the Northeast passage has been given up as too risky. The fleet will probably start in July and go by way of the Cape of Good Hope. Bruts.1 Treatment of Women. Seoul, March 17. Advices from Chen-ju, a town north of Anju, say that the people are in a state of panic owing to the treatment of women and the seizing of grain by the Russiaus. CLOSED THE DOORS Colombian Legation at Washington Goes Out of Business. Washington, March 17. The closing of the legation was the direct result of the events ending in tne secession of Panama and the negotiation of the present Panama canal treaty. Dr. Herran goes home on an indefinite leave of absence. Ready to Close the Deaf. Havana, March 17. Mr. Leach, of Farson. Leach & Co., of New York and Chicago, who claim to have the contract for the Havana city loan of $28,000,000, which money is to be used for paving and sewering the city called upon the mayor with regard to the matter. The mayor says he is ready to close the deal but that it is necessary for congress to grant the $300,000 annual subsidy offered by Governor General Wood to prevent the re-es-tablishement of the consumption tax on cattle which was suppressed by General Brooks. This tax formerly yielded $700,000 a year. Spain's New Warships. Vico, Spain, March 17. King Alfonso and Emperor William went aboard the Spanish gunboat Vasco Nunez de Balboa, and proceeded to review the Spanish warships. 'After the review the two rulers were rowed to the Spanish royal yacht Giralda for luncheon. Emperor William subsequently sailed for Gibraltar on board the steamer Koenig Albert, and was accompanied on that vessel by King Alfonso until outside Spanish waters. Chinese Reform Movement. Washington, March 17. Shan Mun Shang, a prominent Chinese merchant of San Francisco, called on the president. He is the head of the Chinese reform movement in this country. He says that 25,000,000 Chinamen al ready are enrolled in the movement and that the list Is Increasing rapid iy. Thought He Had Killed Her. Pittsburg, March 17. Harry I. McAlpine shot his wife three times last night, and, thinking she was dead, tried to kill himself by cutting his throat with a piece of glass, followed by taking poison. McAlpine has a slight chance for recovery and his wife is not in a serious condition. Rudolph Without Defense. Union, Mo., March 17. Because no attorney would volunteer to defend Wm. Rudolph, the Union bank robber, charged with killing Detective Chas Schumaker, he was not biought into court to plead. TERSE TELEGRAMS The Russian propow to ran armored trains in Manchuria. Traction Merger Reported. Brazil, Ind., March 1. It is reported here on good authority that George r. McCulloch, of the Union Traction company, has bought from the Terre Haute Electric company the Terre Haute electric lighting plant, the Terre Haute street car line, the Brazil & Terre Haute interurban line, the Brazil street car line and the Brazil electric lighting plant.

Indiana Will Do Herself Proud at the World's Fair.

SOME FINE SPECIMENS What Is Being: Done in Itoosier Schools Kevealed by Comprehensive Object Liesbona. The School Exhibit Will Far Exceed That Made at the Columbian Exposition. x Indianapolis, March 17. Senator Fremont Goodwine, chairman of the educational committee of the world's fair commission, is putting the final touches on the state's educational exhibit. The specimens have all been sent to the state house and much of the exhibit has been arranged for shipment. Senator Goodwine says that the educators of the state who have seen the exhibit say it Is far better than the display sent to the Chicago fair. The exhibit will not be shipped to St. Louis until a few weeks before the opening of the exposition. , j The Indiana commission has 1,600 square feet of floor space besides a triangular space of 350 square feet in which to place the exhibits from the colleges, normal schools and universities. The exhibit will consist of specimens of the work done by the students, besides photographs of the school buildings, exterior and interior. Photographs of buildings will be shown to illustrate the evolution from the old log schoolhouse to the comfortable, sanitary modern school building. DEATH PENALTY IMPOSED Benjamin Springs Sentenced to be Hanged on July 17. .Terre Haute, Ind., March 17. Benjamin Springs, colored, on trial for the murder of Jesse Case, also colored, was found guilty, the jury recommending the death penalty. The court imposed sentence of death, fixing the date for July 17. There was an attempt by defense to plead insanity. It was shown that the act was premeditated, as he first tried to borrow a revolver with which to kill Case, and then used a knife. Found Things Grown Up. Marion, Ind., March 17. Alva Baldwin, who was born on a farm which is now a part of Marion, lived on the farm until he was thirty-five years of age, and then left his home to make a t6ur around the world. He left Marion twenty-five years ago. 'At that time 'it was a place of 2,000 Inhabitants. Baldwin worked his way around the world by easy stages and returned this week having completed his tour in twenty-five years. He expected to find some changes in his native town, but when he arrived and found a city of 30,000 population he was greatly surprised. Action Was Compromised. Columbus, Ind., March 17. A compromise for $3,500 has been made in the damage suit for $10,000 brought by Mrs. Anna Abel against Cudwith Abel, who murdered his nephew, Charles Abel, and for the slaying of whom the suit was brought, Mrs. Abel asserting that she was left destitute by the death of her husband. The suit hinged on the result of the Abel murder trial, and after Cudwith Abel was convicted of manslaughter the attorneys in the damage suit pushed it until this compromise was reached. Burglars Wrecked Postoffice. Crawfordsville, Ind., March 17. The safe of the postoffice at Newmarket was forced by burglars and $200 In stamps and $50 in money, with a package of valuable papers were taken. The explosion was a terrific one, and all but demolished the store in which the postoffice was situated, doing considerable damage to stock. The whole town was awakened but the burglars escaped. Newmarket is four miles from Waveland, where a similar robbery was committed three weeks ago. Dismissed the Indictment. Evansville, Ind., March 17. The indictment for arson, returned by the grand jury against A. J. Perry, a well known lumber man, has been dismissed. In a former trial the jury failed to agree. Mr. Perry surrendered policies calling for $6,000 insurance on his lumber, thus relieving the companies of responsibility. Gabe Brown, colored, who entered a plea of guilty to "burning the lumber, and accused Mr. Perry of employing him to commit the crime, is now in prison. Wouldn't Reveal Identity. Ft. Wayne, Ind., March 17. It ha3 developed that a man who has just been released from Jail after serving a sentence for vagrancy was a United States secret service officer, who preferred to do time rather than reveal his identity. The officers refuse to disclose the identity of the man. Doctor Held to Answer. Evansville, Ind., March 17. Coroner Walling has rendered a verdict in the death of Delia Vann, the Warrick county girl, who died in this city recently under peculiar circumstances, finding it was due to malpractice. Dr. Marie Steiler will be held to await grand Jury investigation.
