NOVEL SEA FIGHT
Hot Duel Between Torpedo i Boat Desh-oyers at Fort Arthur. IT WAS ABOUT A DRAW One Russian Vessel. Was Sent to the Bottom and Jap IjObs Probably the Same. When the Stereguschtchi Went Down Part of Crew Was Captured, the Rest Drowned. Mukden, Manchuria, March 12 Admiral Makaroff. commanding the Russian fleet, reports from Port Arthur as follows: "Six torpedo boats which went out to sea the night of March 10, four of them being under the general com xnand of Capt. Mattoussevitch, encountered the enemy's torpedo boats followed by cruisers. "A hot action ensued In which the torpedo boat destroyer Vlastini discharged a Whitehead torpedo and sunk one of the enemy's torpolo boats. . On the way back the torpedo Jomsc Betraya i-srvpF-i..- .- - TWO OF JAPAN'S SWIFT TOKPEDO BOAT DESTKOIER8. boat destroyer Stereguschtchi commanded by Lieut. Sergueieff, sustained damage, her engine wa3 disabled and she began to founder. By 8 o'clock in the morning five of our torpedo boat destroyers had returned. WThen the critical position of the Ster eguschtchi became evident I hoisted my flag on the cruiser Novik and went with the Novik and the cruiser Boyarin to the rescue. But as five of the enemy's cruisers surrounded our destroyer, and as their battleship squadron was approaching, I did not succeed in saving the Stereguschtchi, which foundered. Part of the crew was made prisoners and part was drowned. "On the ship3 which participated In the night attack one officer was seriously and three others were slight ly wounded, two soldiers were killed and eighteen were wounded. "At 9 o'clock fourteen of the ene my's ships assembled before Port Ar thur and a bombardment was begun with the heavy guns of their battle ship squadron at long range. "This lasted until 1 o'clock in the afternoon. It is estimated that the enemy fired 154 twelve-inch shells. The damage to our vessels was insig nificant, and they are again ready for battle. Our losses were one officer slightly Mounded and one soldier killed and four soldiers wounded. "The illumination of the sea at night by the searchlights mounted at our batteries was most satisfactory, and several times isolated shots from our batteries forced the enemy's tor pedo boats to retire. "With the commencement of the bombardment at dawn the- guns of the fortress replied to the enemy's fire. "The crews of all the ships engaged gave proof of remarkable coolness in aotion. Below decks the work of the day followed its ordinary course, in spite of the shells falling between the vessels and covering them with frag ments. "A bombardment at such a distance must be considered ineffective, but the Japanese cruiser Takasago is reported to have been seeen to suffer serious damage, the extent of which, however, it was Impossible to ascertain at a distance of five miles. Many shells were fired at a range of 1V miles." SOME CONFUSION Seems to Exist Regarding Dates of Recent Actions. London, March 12. Although there Is some confusion of dates in the official messages from the far East regarding recent attacks on Port Ar thur and other engagements which Is probably due to the fact that those Rffalrs occurred during the night time, no fresh action is known to have tak en place on Friday. A correspondent at Seoul describes these Japanese attacks on Port Ar thur as 'successful preparatory bom bardments" thereby intimating that a greater attempt to reduce Port Arthur Is imminent. The official announcement fiom Mukden that the Russian army corps which has arrived at Harbin will be held there because of the landing of Japanese troops at different points and the various reports of the intentions of tbe Japanese commanders, Is an unintentional tribute from Viceroy Alexieff to Japan's extraordinary success In concealing her plan of campaign and mystifying the enemy as to her movements. - A correspondent at Che Foo .rivet
alleged Information of the Japanese landinsr movements up to March 9, and says that disembarkation is proceeding at Chemulpo and points to the northward with marvelous rapidity. During the last ten days sixteen transports have landed 10,000 men at a town the Japanese call Kaishoe (probably Hwang-Ju, 94 miles northwest of Chemulpo on the Tai-Dong river) twelve miles by sea from Chemulpo. Despatch boats begn to run on Vedne,5day between Chemulpo arid Chenauipb. 'The correspondent calculates that up to the present 70,502 .Japanese, have been landed In Northern Korea. The correspondent says also that a torpedo boat destroyer and a transport are aground off Chemulpo, the former is lightly damaged and the atter which has the appearance or a cruiser, is completely wrecked. Cabling from Yin Kow a correspondent says the British and American gunboats at New Chwang have received orders to leave immediately when the river opens. The Liao
Yang correspondent says there are now 12,000 troops working day and night on the fortifications. A great fortified camp is being formed south of the town; it extends three miles In every direction. The Russian force on the Yalu river now amounts to 20,000 men. Tien Tain Advices. Tien Tsin, March 12. Newspaper men will not he aiiowea to ioiiow either the Russian or the Japanese armies before all the troops are con centrated. Twenty thousand welltrained troops under Gen. Ma are camped on the Manchurian frontier. Should the Japanese land at New Chwang and gain a victory it. is be lieved here that the Chinese army would join them. It is currently reported in Tien Tsin that Russia will enter Pekin before the end of the war. Spoiled the Night's Enjoyment. St. Petersburg, March 12. During a concert at court last evening organized by the empress, a rumor was current that the Russians had lost heavily during the last Japanese at tack on Port Arthur. The imperial box remained empty, whereas the em press and the dowager empress and other members of the imperial family had been expected to be present at this strictly official fete seems to give confirmation to the rumor. SENSATIONAL CHARGE Mads by Col. Cody Against Hi3 Wife. Denver, March 12. A petition for divorce filed in the district court of Big Horn county, Wyoming, Jan. 9 last by William F. Cody (Buffalo Bill) has just been made public. The complaint charges cruelty and alleges that on Dec. 26, 1900 Mrs. Cody attempted to RTJFT-ALO BfLL. poison the plaintiff. Another ground on which the plaintiff asks a decree is that the marital relation has been intolerable to him by his wife's refus al to entertain his friends at his home at North Platte, N. D. Mrs. Cody, who is at North Plattte, denies her husband's charges, and will contest the suit. Col. and Mrs. Cody were married at St. Louis, March 6, 18G6. Cracksmen Thwarted. Washington, Ind., March 12. Bur glars broke into the National bank at Elnora and were working on the safe when Joel Danner passed by and frightened them away. The burglars had charged the safe with nitroglycerin. Even the fuse had been inserted and all was in readiness when the robbers became frightened and ran away. There was $28,000 in the safe. Martial Law Suspended. Telluride. Colo., March 12. Martial law was declared off In this district last night. TERSE TELEGRAMS The Japaneso land adranco has began in Korea and Manchuria.
