A President like
rress, makes history
THE CANAL TREATY. Theodore Roosevelt, backed bv a Republican eon-
at a rapid rate. Only a few short months ago,
Venezuela was having trouble with European nations. Had it not been for the prompt action of the President, the Monroe Doctrine would have been violated. ,. ! ! Not long after, Columbia refused to ratify a canal treaty, Panama seceded, and President Roosevelt took immediate steps to recognize the young republic and secure from her canal concessions that were refused by Columbia. The treaty lias been ratified and the United States have secured all the rights and privileges necessary to proceed with the canal and control it when it is completed. Uncle Sam has looked after all the preliminaries and is rea' dig. The preparation is complete and its consummation is due to iiie vigorous and judicious statesmanship of President Roosevelt, backed by the progressive members of congress. We say. progressive advisedly because the treaty was ratified by both Democrats and Republicans. While the Republicans did not need any assistance from the Democrats, it is gratifying to know that there are Democrats in congress who are large enough to rise above party when they can advance anv interests of the United States. They are more patriotic than partisan
They have not only risen above party but have ignored Gormanism and other issues that usually stand in the way of national progress and na
tional preeminence. ; -y i (', 34

Farmers! Now is the time to have your plows laid or new shears made. John Atkinson, north A, between eighth and ninth, Richmond.
Sometimes when a man becomes old in years and venerable in service; when he has reached the summit of fame and is basking in the smiles of his admiring countrymen, he will suddenly resign from public duties and retire to the well earned rest and recreations of private life Senator Hoar is an exception to this class of public men and is holding on to public life when he could serve the country best by his retirement from the senate. He has been a great and good man but some younger man could be found in Senator Hoar's grand old state and a. man who would be glad fo wear the toga of that distinguished body and. Avouhl and could render more vigorous and less abstractive service to his countrv.
Congressional situations in the Eighth and Eleventh Indiana districts seem to have features directly opposed. In one they are attempting to repudiate the old and nominate the new. In the other they want to defeat the new and restore the old. The outcome will be the nomination of Maj. Steele in the Eleventh and Congressman Cromer in the Eighth. Certain individuals are promising Dunlap great, things from the "other" counties, but promising and delivering are two different propositions."
A lying correspondent at Washington reported, at the time of Sen. Hanna's death, that Indiana's junior senator had demanded an appointment on the committee to attend Sen. .Hanna's funeral and had also asked for the dead senator's vacant seat in the upper chamber of congress. No one who knows Senator Beveridge ever believed a word of this stuff and the man who circulated such rot ought to be ashamed of himself. He is worse than a coward and meaner than a gorilla.
General Dick will succeed Mr. Hanna in the senate. Pure, unselfish friendship always has its rewa,t. Senator Hanna was the strongest factor in bringing out McKinley for the presidency. He was rewarded with a seat in the United States Senate. He did not expect this and during the McKinley campaign was actuated by nothing but personal friendship. Now Hanna is gone and his nearest friend will succeed him a tribute to both the living and the dead. Tt is known that $70,000,000 were contributed to schools. colleges, universities, libraries and hospitals during the past .year. This proves that the educational sentiment is growing. ' Ignorance and vice must get out of the way of intelligence and righteousness. Who says the world is not growing better? The Japanese tried Commander Hobson's heroic method of obstructing the entrance to Port Arthur but failed with the loss of four merchant ships. Japan's star is not as bright as it was a few days ago.
Western League Standing. Deafness Cannot be Cured Ly local application as they cannot reach the diseased portion of the ear. There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is by constitutional remedies. Deafness is caused by an inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When this tube is inflamed you have a rumbling sound or imperfect hearing, and when it is entirely closed, Deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation can be taken out and this tube restored to its normal condition, hearing will be destroyed forever. Nine cases out of ten are caused by Catarrh, which is nothing but an inflamed condition of the mucous services. We will give One Hundred Dollars for any case of Deafness (caused by catarrh) that cannot be cured by Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circulars, free. F. J. CHENEY & CO., Toledo, O. Richmond lost the game at Muncie last night by a score of 11 to 4. The game was decidedly one-sided. Jessup left his pads on the train and could not pi a j', and "Corky" Harris, an amateur of Muncie, tended goal and made 48 stops, two more than Jessnp made here Wednesday night. Cunningham, jr., was taken out of the game in the second period and Haughton went in. Line-up and summary: Muncie. Position. Richmond. Higgins . .. . First rush Bone Cunningham,
