Department Officials in Doubt as to Safety of Old Guns. Washington, Feb. 6. Immediately on receipt of the telegram announcing the accident to the Iowa, Secretary Moody sent a dispatch at once to New York for full details and ordering the Iowa to proceed at once to New York for examination and repairs. This second explosion on the Iowa within less than a year has cast a gloom over the officials of the navy department. The cause of the explosion off Panama last year in which there was a loss of life and considerable damage to the ship remains a mystery. Several boards attempted to clear it up, but without definite result. Until the details of the accident are obtained Rear Admiral O'Neil, chief of ordinance, is willing to speculate as to the cause. The alarming feature of these two accidents is the apprehension growing in naval circles that the older guns

THE STATE OF TRADE
Week Marked by Wildly Fluctuating Market in Staples. New York, Feb. G. Brod street's weekly review of trade today s-ws: Weather conditions unfavorably affect trade and transportation throughout most of the West, while wildly fluctuating markets of cotton, coffee and the cereals make the speculative situation of those staples a matter of concern. The feeling grows that a later opening of spring trade and conservative buying are to be looked for in many lines. Exceptions are to be found at the South, which reports wholesale trade active, especially in fertilizers, livestock and implements, all preparations looking to an immense acreage in cotton. Next to this may be classed the Southwest, which, despite cold weather, reports trade satisfactory for the season, the outlook good and bank clearings very large. Eastern trade reports are good as to retail winter trade, which is said to have cleaned up old stocks of goods. As to spring trade, however, irregularity is noted.
EarFham Orator Wins. Indianapolis. Feb. C. The inter-co!-, legiate oratorical contest last night attracted a large audience. Seven Indiana colleges were represented. The first prize went to Earlham, represented by I-uther ivi. Feeger, whose p -ibject was "Cnstavus Adolphus." DePanw, represented by M. C. Wright, secured second, and Hutler, represented by Charles F. McElroy. third.
Active Missions m Mexico. Mexico City, Feb. G. The anmial meeting of the Presbyterian mission workers in Mex'co was satisfactory. Great activitv in all fields of work and especially in education were shown.
therefore what a trying', tedious and in some cases terrible thing- sickness is. Imagine then what the life of the poor unfortunate must be who is sick all the time. Such, until recently,
was the fate of Mr. Robert P. Moore, 35 Glenwood avenue, Akron, Ohio. lie was a constant sufferer and unexpectedly regained his health, and is now a well man. This is Avhat he has to say of his remarkable recovery: The Cooper Medicine Co. Gentlemen : I can never say too much in recommendation of Dr. Cooper's New Discovery. For over five years I have not seen a well day and very few days that I could earn a day's pay. I never could find out what was really the matter with me, but I ahvavs felt bad and life was a
misery to me. I tried in many ways to get well, but nothing did me any good. I finally purchased" a bottle of your medicine and it gave me great relief. I then took two more and they have made a new man of me. Yours truly, ROBERT P. MOORE. This is the kind of friend Dr. Cooper's Xew Discovery makes. Mr. Moore 's case is only one of many of a similar nature. Are you a sufferer? Have you despaired of getting relief? If so go to your druggist and ask him for a bottle of this wonderful remedv. If the medicine fails t
cure you Ave will cheerfully refund every penny you have spent for it. The Cooper Medicine Co., Dayton, Ohio. Reduced Pares to Evansville, Ind., via Pennsylvania Lines.
