"Si Plunkard" pleased a fairly good house at the Gennett theater last night. The piece has improved wonderfully since last seen here, and much of the slap stick features have been eliminated. Mr. Lewis has still another play in course of preparation that will, tis said, rival that most successful of pastoral plays "'Way Down East." Very few people realize what a task it is to properly heat a play house. Notwithstanding zero weather the Gennett was cosily warm last night.
"Winsome Winnie." Fresh from a long and successful run at the Casino, New York, "Winsome Winnie" comes to the Gennett theater Monday evening, February 1. This latest musical play by the authors of "Erminie," is employed to exploit the well-remembered charms of Paula Edwardes, identified with all the brilliant musical productions of the late Augustin Daly. Miss Edwardes, though the youngest and newest , of stars has already proved
her rirht to the position, and has !
scored the biggest personal triumph recorded for the present season. Miss Edwardes has been surrounded by 'a east of 100 sincrers and comedians.
and her managers, Messrs. Sam S. Shubert and Nixon & Zimmerman, have spared nothing to make the' settings and costuming unique and effective. The advance sale of seats will open Friday, January 29. "The Silver Slipper." "The Silver Slipper," John C. Fisher's latest musical comedy success, which will be the attraction at the Gennett theater Wednesday, Feb. 3, will be found to be altogether superb from a spectacular point of view. It fairly bristles with tuneful music, hilarity and comedy, and one event of interest follows so closely on the heels of its predecessor that the audiences are kept on the qui vivo without an instant's cessation. This charming musical play is by the !
authors of "FJorodora," Owen Hall being responsible for the book Leslie Stuart for the music and W. II. Kis-
que for the lyrics. The book was rearranged for the American stage by Clay M. Greene, who has infused blocks of comedy and American wit and humor into Hall's story of the play. Musically, "The Silver Slipper" is particularly strong, there being twenty-five musical numbers in all. The majority of these were composed by Leslie Stuart, though several numbers that quickly become popular were interpolated. Of the interpolated numbers, "Then I'd be Satisfied with Life" and "The Girl You Love," a sentimental ditty, and a tenor solo entitled "Tessie, You are the Only, Only, Only" scored instantaneous hits and are of the whistleable kind. "Under Southern Skies." "Lottie Blair Parker's beuutiful play, "Under Southern Skies" is meeting with great success everywhere, and is looked upon as a sure drawing card by all theatre managers throughout the country. The company is large, and the production which is elaborate and complete shows that a considerable amount of money has been spent on the mounting and costuming of the play. ' ' Under Southern Skies ' ' was presented before an audience that crowded every part of the house. This play is to Southland, what "Way Down East" is to 'New England. The play has its share of dramatic intensity, but the feature that chiefly recommends it, is its mirth and humor and its pretty illustrations of Southern life in the south some years after
the war. Particularly enjoyable were the Halloween scenes in the second act, in which there was love making galore, with bandaged eyes, hand mirrors, extinguished candles and other delightful mimicry. The company giving "Under Southern Skies" is both unusually large and unusually good." At Gennett Feb. 29.
