Pittsburg Keceives Much Damage and Is Still Sorely Threatened. MILLION DOLLAR LOSS Thus Far the Damage Will Foot Up This Amount With Crest of the Flood Yet I to Come. High Waters and Destructive Ice Floes Give Cause for Grave Apprehension. Pittsburg, Jan. 23. Pittsburg had begun to cherish the belief that th warnings of danger from the rivers had been exaggerated. This sense of security was due to the rapid disappearance of ice and water from the upper Allegheny river. But early this morning the Monongahela river broke loose. Huge masses of Ice, less broken than that which has been rushing down the Allegheny river, are choking the channel. Both rivers are steadily rising as a result of the new stoppage. The Allegheny is already three feet higher than the Monongahela and a dangerous ice gorge is forming between the Wabash and the Smithfield street bridge, just above the confluence of the rivers. From all points the. streams are rising. The flood probably will not have reached its height until Sunday morning. Little damage has been reported thus far. Business men, mill owners, residents and rivermen are included in the list of possible sufferers. The poor in some of the low quarters of the city may be hemmed in in their homes until Sunday night, for there Is ice enough in both rivers to keep the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers well filled until Sunday. Forecaster Ridgeway in a statement issued this morning gave no hope of a subsidence. Owing to the vigorous warning sent out in regard to the danger from the Allegheny, all of the coal barges and steamboats were sent into the Monongahela to gain the better protection of stiller water. Already a barge containing 40,000 bushels of coal has been sunk and the whole fleet, with nearly 275,000 bushels on board, is likely to go down. The ice is ramming with terrific force and the steamboats and tugs are powerless now to go to the rescue if the fleet is torn from its moorings. The Allegheny is flowing at six miles an hour and the Mononcahela. backed by the stronger rush of the other river, at only two miles. Ice eighteen inches thick is now piling nn where shinning is thickest along Water street and close to the head waters of the Ohio. The ice gorge is twentv-five feet deep and is resting on the bottom of the river. A river man said that the damage wrought by ice would amount to many thousands of dollars. This, coupled with the losses sustained by railroads, business houses, manufacturers, streetcar com panies, government works and resi dents, will likely put the los3 above the $1,000,000 mark. .... Danger Point Past. Indiananolis. Jan 23. The flood sit uation here is vastly improved. The breaking of the ice gorges has relieved the strain on the bridges which were threatened and the only danger now Is from the water which is unusually high. The real danger, however, is believed to be past and the authorities are not worried as they were two days ago. At one time it looked as if the ire wmild wine all the bridges across White river out of existence and such a calamity would have cut the western part of the city off from all communi cation with the main town. The ice has gradually been worked past the bridges, however, and only r. few small obstructions remain in the water. WEEKLY TRADE REVIEW Bradstreet's Report Deals With the Situation. New York. Jan. 23. Bradstreet's weekly review of trade today says: Confidence in prosperous spring trade finds support in an enlarging volume of business at Southern and Southwestern markets, an awakening of interest at some Northwest centers and growth even at central Western, Western and Eastern markets. Here, however, weather conditions are a drawback to the fullest activity. The strength of raw cotton is apparently making it easier to negotiate and place cottons in Eastern markets at the higher lvel of values and manufacturing of and jobbing in shoes ft increasingly active, leather sympathizing in larger sales at higher prices. The iron trade is irregular as a whole and variously regarded, optimistically or the reverse, accordingly as the point of view shifts from crude to finished products or the observer Is located East or West. The lighter finished products of iron and steel are, however, in pretty good shape, and demand is better. Good prices are being obtained as a rule. This May Settle It. San Domingo, Jan. 23. United States Minister Powell has recognized the provisional government of General Morales as the de facto government of Santo Domingo and he has Uformed the members of the diplomatic and consular corps of this act. , ,
