ANOTHER RAILWAY HORROR 1
Wreck On the Reck Island Results In Many Fatalities. Topeka, Kan., Jan. 6. Rock Island passenger train No. 3 collided with a freight train five miles west of Topeka this morning. Many persons were caught in the wreckage. Engineers Reardon and Benjamin and their firemen were killcl and over a dozen passengers were fatally hurt. All tha passenger coaches except the last two Pullmans were piled up in a heap. The two trains met squarely in a head-on collision. AN ABLE DEFENSE Mr. Lodge Carefully Discusses the Panama Situation. Washington, Jan. 6. Close attention was given in the senate to a speech by Mr. Lodge on the situation on the Isthmus of Panama. He discussed the abstract question of th3 right of the president to recognize thv j lndeDndenf! of a nevr nation. ' concluded that such a prerogative per-! tafcis exclusively to the ofilce of tha chief executive. He also contended that there had been a general expectation of an uprising in Panama in case of the failure of the Hay-Herrsa treaty, and declared that the president could net have doae less than Inform himself of the prospects. Mr. Lodge argued that our intervention in Panama had been only In the Interest of peace and contended that the president had not gone a stop beyond what the proprieties called for. Mr. Lodge criticised the presidential administra tion of Mr. Cleveland, saying that he did not think anything could be "happier for the Republicans than to have the Democrats nominate the last Democratic reform president on a policy cf sustaining Colombia and opposing ihe United State? in digging a canal at Panama," Doings in the House. Washington, Jan. G. The privileged resolution proposed by Mr. Hay (Va.) providing . for an investigation of certain statements In the Brlstow postoffice report reflecting on the membership of the hoise, was referred to the committee on postofflces and postroads, on motion of Mr. Payne (N. Y.), the majority leader. Eight Republicans voted with the minority on Mr. Kay's motion to order the previous question, which was lost, and three Re publicans voted with the Democratic minority against the motion to refe. WOULDN'T BE PROPER Says Reyes, for Him to Decline Election to Presidency. Washington, Jan. 6. Although he declared that under any circumstances he would not be a candidate for the presidency of Colombia, Gen. Reyes does not feel that he can decline to serve now that he has been selected and he expects to accept. The general is essentially a soldier. not a politician and bis preferences are for the army; still knowing that he has .been chosen for the selection of electors in Colombia is said to be equivalent to an election as in the United States, he will accept the office. Gen. Reyes is highly esteemed by the people of Colombia and now that he has received their erorement through the election r' n-t-a favorable to him, feels it v:o"Ii not h proper to decline the presidential oxfice. Due to Defective Wires. Burlington, la., Jaa. 6. Fire which originated in the big building occupied by the J. V. Ritchey Furniture com pany and the Wyman & .Rands Carpet company last night gutted half a block of business houses, entailing a loss of $200,000, fairly well covered by Insur ance. Defective electric light wjring is supposed to have been the cause. The SoiaJer'a fille Time. Military life is necessarily made up largely of loafing. You cannot keep a man continuously at drilling, marching or any other branch of military train ing fcr eight Lours a da' i;nd- five or six days a week. You have to invent a great many other jobs for him, even to make a pretense of keeping hiui occupied. But these jobs are nearly all "loafing" jobs, and when it is all done the soldier Las a great many more idle hours on his hands per diem than any other man in the same rank of life. do not know whether it is possible to n-rrive at any remedy for this, but, if It is, the direction in which I should look for the remedy would be to make every soldier work at some other trade for a certain number of hours each day. The number of hours might be shorter in the summer, when tnre is more opportunity for training and mill tary exercise, and longer In the winter. If this were practicable, no doubt it would make an enormous difference to the value of the soldier as a citizen when he leaves the ranks. London Truth. Catblrda and Black Snake. A writer in the Scientific American says: "I witnessed a pair of catbirds making a bold defense against a black snake bent on devouring the contents of their nests. At flrst the snake was Inclined to disregard the distressed birds as they fought to drive it away, but the blows of their win.as and bills became so annoying that the thief had to seel; refn,;e in flight. On reaching the roots of the tret, from which ttie river had washed the dirt, tin sunk-' started to climb. on!y to be driven beneath them and then out to an old stump, under which the baffled and beaten reptile took refuge."
Night Was Her Terror. "I would cough nearly all niglit long," writes Mrs. Chas. Applegate, of Alexandria, Ind., ' ' and could hardly get any sleep. I had consumption so bad that if I walked a block I would cough frightfully and spit blood, but, when all other medicines failed, three $1.00 bottles of Dr. King's &ew Discovery wholly cured me and I gained 53 ponds."
