A Joaraallst's Srhear. GTirral Harrison Gray Otis, editor and publisher of the Los Angeles Times, has laid before the St. Louis World's fair management a project for! a monster newspaper plant at the ex i position. His idea is to establish a j complete newspaper outfit iu the expo J OEXERA1, HARRISON GRAY OTI3. lit ion grounds and to issue therefrom special editions of the papers that enter the scheme. General Otis say lays could be set apart for each paper, to le known as Los Anjreles Time day, St. Louis Republic day, for examples, the matrices to be set in the home offices at Chicago. Itoston, St. Louis, etc., and forwarded to the man crers of the undertaking at St. Ixjuts. The general's idea is to oien the doors to not only the journals of this country, but to the whole world. Ko More Quirt Talks. Our t'nele Shelby Cullom complain of "publicity" when ho seeks a quiff talk with the president about Illinois appointments. He recently said: "fJettius the president's ear is like opei;;:i a window and shouting at the wide, wide world. He talks too loud." .And there was a plaintive tone in the voice of our venerated states'nau as he described this unusual feature of "con fidential" conferences with the president. So they all say. As far as privacy is concerned they might as well announce on a billboard the objects of their visits to the White House as to attempt to make It a matter of private conversation with the president. r:dlaons Shorthand Speech. Thomas A. Kdison. as is known, is very deaf. Perhaps owing to this or possibly to a playful pleasantry he .iaf Invented a sort of shorthand speech, among which is his greeting to the older hands in his shop and laboratory. When he sees one of these men. "Boo!" says Mr. Edison. That expression has come to mean good morning or good afternoon or good night. The laboratory men have picked up the pecuiiat greeting, so that when the "b.ss" appears in the morning he is greeted in his own shorthand speech. It Is therefore "Koo. Mr. Edison." to the wondet and bewilderment of the uninitiated. Attack on Xorwav'i Grand Old Man. Norway's "grand old man," BjoMst jerne Bjornson, the noted writer, is :n ttouble. and the whole of Scand'navta is stirred up over a scandal iovolvirg the pillars of Norwegian society and political life. In 1S83 Herr Ri.:hter. minister of Norway, after a bitter political fight committed suicide. That Richter's suicide was caused Ly political reasons no one doubted, tnd rumors were many, insinuating that either Sverdrup or Rjomson. the leaders of the party opposed to Ricbter, hd had a hand in the affair. In fact, it was generally talked ot that Sverdrup, by acquiring possession cf very compromising papers, had forced Ricbter to self destruction. Sverdrup went to his death with that recusation still unproved, and it is the efforts of his children, to clear their father's memory which has caused the BJOKSSTJERIfK BJOR2ISO!. jresent sensation in advancing th remarkable charge that Bjornson ant ot Sverdrup was responsible for tb suicide of the Norwegian statesman. Their charges are based upon tbt testimony of Mr. Richter's sister, wh. openly declared at the time that Bjorc son. by his persecution of Richter. caused his death. The great author strenuously deniet the charges, although admitting hii Hatred, personally and politically, c-. Ricbter. and has brought suit agaias. h ehU1i-D of. Srnrdma

KITCHEN HELPS. Don't wash glasses In clear water. Ise a iittle soap. Don't put tin d:hes in greasy water. It deadens the brightness. Clean the steel w rU of your kitchen range when discolored by rubbing it with vinegar. It is stated that a bit of lemoa tossed Into the water in which kitchen towels and other cleanins cloths are scalded will sweeten them pi rceplibly. lin"t scrub your refrigerator with T.arm wafer. When necessary, sponge it out ijuiekly wish two ounces of formaldehyde in two quarts of coid water. fill saucepans with cold water directly they are emptied, add a piece of si tla and set on the stove again. This is especially helpful in the cleaning of utensils after cereals and sticUj food have betm cooked in them. To make perfectly sure that nil trace of the coffee has been removed from the interior of the coffeepot, flil it with 'old water and let it heat tdmv'y on the back of the range. Empty it and dry thi roiighly before putting It nway. It is a good plan to keep n envk of fullei's earth In ttie kitche-i f yr removing spots of grease from carpets, boards, marble, etc. If opplUd lrnrue. diately and well rubbed in. it will absorb tne grease and may tl-en te brushed ofT dry without iu hiring the color or fabric.
VrarefEl Walk. In walking one should end'-avor t take a long, smooth, gliding step rather than a short, choppy one. By the bitter is meant the hippety, hop;vty, JHMe jerky walk which many small v.-jun affect and which always t-ugc'ta to the onlooker tight shoes. No woman who can put her f-ot down comfortably and hrmty wi 1 eTer walk in this manner, and the firm, steady walk, with its undulating gl'de. that is as different as possible from a masculine stride, improves the whole appearance. To walk well and properly one should transfer the weight of the body from one leg to the other as each is throwp forward in taking a 6tep. This throwing of the weight Is accompanied by a graceful. M-areely perceptible, swaying of the txwly. .The weight of the liody should come more on the ball of the foot than on the heel, but the latter should ligh(iy touch he ground at every step. W'M'king on tho toes alone gives a finicky, dancini; schoolmaster look to the figure. The toes should be gracefully turned out at each step, and the leg S'lould swing loose from the hip. Buffalo Times. Grease on Wool. It is said the powdered borax will take grease spots out of woolen goods better than anything else that can be used on short notice. Spread the skirt out with the siot over a smooth place on the tabb" and rub the borax Into It with the fingers, allowing it to remain a few minutes, then brush off with a whiskbroom. . Io this two or three times or till the spot disappears, and your skirt is ready to wear. Steam. If the cover of the kettle is lifted, the boiling water seems to be covered bj a cloud of white steam, but this cloud did not exist before the cover was raised. It has been formed by the sudden cooling of the vapor. In a glass boiler which is either completely sealed or provided with only a narrow outlet for the vnior tht rpace above the water is perfectly transparent and apparently empty. A Clever Jap. A marvelous feat is recorded of a young Japanese student. He entered the University of Berlin some years ago as a medical student, being then entirely ignorant of German as well as of science, yet in three months he passed an examination conducted in German, including several branches of the tretienl ""-:'-'-' TDE BALANCE OF DEALTD Is often very much against th wife. Her strength is undermined, she loaaa flesh and her energy and courage slowly leak away from hr. Gradually the comradeship of husband and wife is broken up. At first he takw his solitary pleasures reluctantly, bat later he hardly seems to remember th old days over which his wife in hr weakness mourns daily.
