YVuen it c-iuie to JauiK-biu: tlie loat. however, it was found that no ordinary open lioat could live in tbe anp-y sea which surged around t-e lisbtsbip. I'or more than a week the storm had been raslns. Though the captain wis willing to brave the dangers in the hoie of reacbiriir his dyinjr daughter's ImhIsUIo. he could not conscientiously ask his men to risk their lives for his sake. He could only iend the dreary hours in wondering how h!a child was faring. Cashing ever and anon messages to the shore making anxious inquiry. As the weary hours crept on Captain Jorgeiisou paced the slorm swept deck of the Hghlsh'p. watching the elements in hoe that there would lie a lull In the Ktoriu. But itB fury increased from day to day. In the captaiu's home the jrrief and anx"e;y were heartrending. The dying girl expresRed hut one wish, tunde hut one inquiry, a the hours crept by: "Why don't father come to nie? Sh;ill 1 tu-f him hefore I die? Tell him to come quick." At the signal station on shore the wireless messages were aent out from hour to hour, giving the captain bulletins of his daughter's condition. Every one knew the deep attachment which the old captain felt for his daughter. She bad spent days with him on tbe lightship, helping him to keep his. lonely vigil, cheering his dreary existence. Now death was claiming her for its own. Unless the captain were taken from the ship In time be would never see her alive. Government officials, among whom Captain Jorgenson was a great favorite, planned to relieve the captain's torture. The lightship tender Azalea was requisitioned to effect tbe captain's rescue. The boat went out to sea In the teeth of the storm. When the Azalea came to within megaphone hailing distance of tbe lightship, it was found that nhe could approach no nearer owing to the high seas, and the little tender put back. Then, after days and nights of anguish, the wireless massage came, "Christine Is dead." A pitiful hope now sprung up In the bereaved man's heart. If he could only reach home in time to see the dead girl's face, he would snatch from fate some meager crumb of comfort. At last the angry wind expended Its fury. A westbound steamer stopped near the lightship, and, though the seas were running dangerously high, the captain managed to reach the deck of the Anchor line steamer Astoria, which enabled the unfortunate and bereaved sailor to reach his daughter's home in Braintree, Mass. Captain Jorgenson has described for the New York World his hours of anxious waiting and agony on the storm beset lightship: "On the day my daughter died," aaid he, "wireless messages which owing tc some derangement of the apparatui on land had been delayed began coming at the lightship, the first telling m that my daughter was very sick, an other that she was dying and a third that siie was dead. It was a weird and dreadfu! experience, like a ghosl message delivered to me by an unseec agency out of the tempest. I was frantic, for 1 knew it meant death foi me to attempt to leare the ship. . On Saturday Jan. 4 and Puiiday it was the same, for no boat could reach me, and in my despair, realizing the uttei impossibility of reaching land. I uearlj died. On Monday the weather ch'ared. but no toat hove in sight, unu not until Tuesday morning. wbn the Atlantic liner Astoria, from Glasgow, cam along, ttound inward for New York, was I able to signal. She took me off and the next day we reached New York. Then came the quarantine and other delays, so that I did not react home until Thursday. "I can say nothing more of my ex perience during that , fearful week, longing and praying for one look at my dead daughter's face and fearing that she would be laid away before I could see her. But. thank God. I ar rived in time. Now that it is over 1 feel that my affliction hr.s aged m terribly. I was comparatively young before it happened and my hair was scarcely touched with gray. Now, a: you see, it Is almost white. Though fate had played a tragic trick on the aged lightship master, yet it did not deny him the melancholy satisfaction of seeing his daughter before she was laid awav In the tomb. - The Amrrlras la Oriental Field.
