More Than Two Score Lives Lost In a Blaze In a " Mexican City. THE BUILDING FELL lis Larsre Foree Enqrasred In Salva;rp Work Crushed la the Ba-eiueut Dj I be Uldzinsr Pile. Dt-strnetlon of Market Buildinjr A! Zaeateca Entails a Fearful Ls ot Life. San Antonio. Tex.. Dec. 23. News has just reached here of a terrible fire in the cltjr of Zscatecas in the Mexican state of the same name, in which many lives were lost. The Are was in the principal market bui'd ng owned by the city. The lower part of the building contained a large number of cellars and refrigerating apartments which were stacked with meats for city consumption. The fire broke out in these cellars and when discovered had made considerable headway. In order to save as much of the meat stored in the cellars as possible a large force of men were ordered by the authorities into the burning structure, and while t force was working the fames burned their way to the top 01 the market, completely enveloping it. The fire department was unable to check the progress of the lire and after burning several hours the building collapsed, the crumbling walls burying a large number of the men in the cellars under the ruins. Just how many were killed is not known, but the loss of life is said to be appalling. Latest advices from Zacatecas state that 15 dead bodies had been taken from the ruins, while it is believed many are still under the wrecked walls. The market building was one of the finest structures of Its kind in the republic and was a source of great revenue to the city. There is no hope that any of the bodies under the ruins are alive. How the fire originated is not known. From the reports received it is believed that fully 45 lives have been lost and over a score of persons seriously injured, some of them so badly that they cannot recover. A large force Is at work clearing away the debris in order to recover others, though there is no hope that any of those cn-ight in the collapse of the big structure will be found alive. It is impossible at this time to learn the names of the victims. Those who escaped uninjured from the blazing ruins were so panic-stricken that it was soiie time before an organized ..Attempt at rescue could be made and ' in the meantime the moans and cries of those who had not been killed outright could be heard. Many of them begged to be killed before the fire could reach them and as they saw there was no hope of rescue. The fire department is poorly equipped and the supply of water inade quate. so that no effective resistance could be ofTered to prevent the spreading of the fire, which burned itself out and left many unfortunates buried beneath tons of wreckage. As soon possible an effort was made to get the bodies of the dead, but the heat drove back the rescuers for hours and only 15 of those who were nearest thouter wall3 of the building could be removed. Bl'FFKTfcl BY WATCJ Terrible fCsperieitce or a Lake Ve ael at Lmliiifeton Harbor. Ludington, Mich Dee. 23. While entering Ludicgton harbor Saturday midnight during a heavy southerly gale, the Pere Marquette car-ferry No. 16 struck a bar, disabling her machinery and breaking the main feed steampipe. Great volumes of steam instantI yescaped. Mie Taft. a coal passer whose home is in Chicago, was scalded to death and two other coal passers whose names were unknown were also t..-ribly scalded. They now lie in the marine hospital here, hovering between life and death. Many others who were in the hold of the car-ferry received bad burns from the steam and suffered great hardships during the nine hours which followed before they were ret-Tued. The accidert happened at midnight and during the remainder of V. ; night there was neither light nor heat on the boat. The wind was bitterly cold. Great seas rol'.ed across the deck and ice formed wherever the water fell. The No. 16 arrived off the harbor from Milwaukee at midnight after a tempestuous voyage. In spite of the heavy seas and strong wind from an unfavorable quarter. Captain Charles Thompson decided to hazard an entrance to the harbor. He would have succeeded had not his boat at an unfortunate moment sunk low in the hollow of a big wave and struck the bar with terr!flc force. The shock completely disordered the machinery of the boat. Left without power she pounded heavily, stoving several large holes in her forward quarter. Thereupon Captain Thompson ordered the sea-cocks opened and the boat was scuttled in 16 feet of water. When day broke the life-saving crew by means of their cannon threw a line to the wrecked craft and began rescuing the crew with their breeches fcuov apparatus. The entire crew of 33 mer and the body of Taft were taken off the wreck in this manner. One by one the men were hauled over the churn ing ice on the suspended cable. The operation occupied four hours and wa;witnessed with breathless interest by an immense crowd of people. It if believed that the No. 16 will prove a total loss. An attempt will be mad to pump her out, but unless weather conditions are perfect it will be almos; impossible. Great banks of ice surround the boat on all sides. Boat and cargo are valued at $200,000 and ar? fully insured.
