Sampson yesterday filt?d with Secretary of the Navy I-ong his objection to that part of Admiral Dewey"a report ot the Schley court ot Inquiry In which he says Admiral Schley was in command at the battle of Santiago and entitled to the credit lor the victory. When Admiral Schley became aware of the fact that the protest of Stayton and Campbell, also of Admiral Sampson, had reached Secretary Ixng. he made a request to be furn.shed with an official copy of the proti-at. but was Informed that as the protests of both the admirals at that time were considered by the Judge advocate general, the secretary could take Immediate action on the request. Secretary Long went over to the White House some time before the cabinet meeting, and It is understood took with him the two documents. In the event that Secretary Long approves the recommendation of Captain Lemly and Mr. Hanna it is stated upon reliable authority that the suggestion will be made to the president, by Admiral Schley's counsel that he appoint a board of three eminent lawyers, one to be selected by himself and one each to be selected by Admiral Schley and Admiral Sampson, this board to weigh the evidence and report to the president. It is said there a number of precedents for such action. Judge Advocate Lemly yesterday replied, in a communication to Secretary Long, to the protest of Admiral Schley's attorneys to the majority finding of the court inquiry. In conclusion Judge Advocate Lemly's report says: "We are satisfied that no good purpose would be served by remitting the proceedings or any of the features of this Inquiry to the court. A more patient, exhaustive and painstaking hearing was never given; greater consideration was sever extended to any officer before a military court of Inquiry. No expense was spared, no convenience or facility denied, no courtesy refused The applicant has had his day in court and the judgment is against him. It is accordingly recommended that the proceedings be not returned, but that the matter be concluded by the department's approval of te unanimous ftading." Secretary Long may give his report In the matter today. Courtroom Oratory. Chicago, Dec. 21. "I believe there is not a railroad or railway company in Chicago that does not bribe jurors. It looks to me as If there was a trust of these corporations a club, and that Lynch was their clearing house for such corruption." These sentences figured in one of the climaxes of Attorney C. M. Hardy's speech last night in the trial of Alex Sullivan on a charge of conspiracy to keep J. J. Lynch out of the jurisdiction of Cook county courts. The testimony in the case had been conclude!' during the day and the opening argument for the state was made in the afternoon. A night session was held and Mr. Hardy made an argument for the defense. It is hoped the case will go to the jury tonight. Another Boiler Let Go. Pittsburg, Dec. 21. Three dead, one missing and 12 injured is the result of a terrific boiler explosion at the Black Diamond Steel works of Park Bros., on 30th street, yesterday. No known cause can be given for the explosion. A thorough investigation is now in progress. The four boilers exploded at one time, reducing the mill to a heap of burned and charred and twisted iron. Usrdner Holds His Title. San Francisco, Dec. 21. George Gardner of Lowell, Mass., and Kid Carter of Brooklyn, met last night at Mechanics' Pavilion under the auspices of the San Francisco Athletic club, in which it was announced as a contest for the middleweight championship of the world. Gardner clearly established his right to the title by knocking out Carter in the eighth round. Thr" Men Shm. Lawton, O. T., Dec. 21. Three men were shot in a dispute near here yesterday. It is said the shooting was done by a man named Roberts, and that all three of the wounded men have died. Roberts is fortified in a house, defying arrest. The sheriff and two marshals have gone to the scene. The names of the dead men are not obtainable. Paderborn. Russia. Dec. 21. There Has beea a railroad collision in the fog near Neuenbeken between the Berlin express and a freight train, in which the former was derailed. Twenty persons were injured. The bodies f six dead have been recovered. Other dead bodies are still buried in the wreckage.
