Any honest avocation is honorable. Says a writer in Success: "Dig trenches, shovel coal, carry a hod; do anything rather than sacrifice your self-respect, blunt your sense of right and wrong, and shut yourself off forever fron the true joy of living, which comes only from the consciousness of doing one's best.

State Factory Inspector McAbee has tiled bis annual report with the eovernor. It gives a most flattering showing of the labor condition in this state. Among other things the 'eport says: "The wave of prosperity which was first felt in the fall of 1897 has continued with unabated force until not only have the unemployed found employment at remunerative wage, but it has caused an actual dearth of mechanics and laborers in nearly all the trade. This is more noticeable in the window glass houses and among that class of iroa workers where the old process known as 'puddling' is still in vojzue. Puddlers are at a .premium, consequently they are receiving the highest compensation ever received for this kind of work. "Furniture manufacturers are employing all who ask for work. Managers of one night stacds are waking up to tl e importance of bav ing tbeatres abreast of the times as evidecced by a letter rece ved by William A. Brady, who controls the new Clyde Fitch play, "Lover's Lane," which will be seen here at Christmas, matinee and night. This play, together with " 'Way Down East," another of Mr. Rrady's attractions, are to be seen some time during the season in Cynthiana.Ky., and the opera house manager in that town has written for complete lists of properties for both plavs. He

says that he intends to get an entirely new set of properties and he is getting lists from all the companies

whicb are to play with him, as be means to buy such furniture as will best meet the needs of traveling companies. Referring to the children used in "Lover's Lane," this manager proposes to select some

twenty younesters and have them trained until such time as the play is due in Cynthiana. He proposes to have them photographed in a group and have the local papers use tbe picture to stir up interest in the engagement. This is exactly in the spirit of the managers in the large cities, but is uncommon among the

Quite the strongest play of the season, certainly one of the few great plays of the age, is "Robert of Sicily," from the pen of Grace Livingstone Furniss, author of "A Colonial Girl," and "The Pride of Jonnico. " This work is founded on Longfellow's legendary ballad, "King Robert of the Sicilies," found in "Tales of a Wayside Inn." Mr. Walker Whiteside is presented in the title role, supported by a company of unusual t xcellence and general dramatic ability. Shipman Brothers are presenting Sir. Whiteside in the play and are giving it the most elaborate stage mounting any play has had in years. Max Freeman, undoubtedly one of the greatest and most thorough masters of stagecraft in the world personally directed tbe production of the play. Gennett next Friday.
