The general committee which was chosen by the conference called to consider plana for healing the differences between the capitalistic and labor interests of the count r organized yesterday, elected office; s sa.i issued a general statement of its mission. Senator Marcus A. Hanna was chosen its chairman with Samuel Gompers llrst vice chairman. It retains its connection with the National Civic Federation and becomes the industrial department of that organization. The statement which was isBued expressed a determination to strive for industrial peace, to aid in establishing rightful relations between those who toil and their employers, to confer and advise with employers and employed when in conflict, to encourage agreements under which labor shall be performed, and to arbitrate disputes when both Ides to the dispute shall ask for such mediation. A determination to avoid discussion of abstract industrial problems was avowed.

Tragedy at Salt Lake With Kobbery An a Ioiive. Salt Lake City. Dec. 19. The body of James B. Hay. secretary of the Pacific Lumber company, was found burted yesterday in a shallow trench alongside the Rio Grande tracks near Sixth street. Monday night Hay callad at the home of Peter Mortensen. a contractor, and collected $3,800 which Mortensen owed the Pacific Lumber company. He gave.. a receipt to Mortensen and left the latter's house with the remark that he was going to take the money to .Vanager G. E. Romney of the lumber company. Since that time nothing had been seen or heard of Hay nntil yesterday, when his body u found. The money was gone and la the back of Hay's head was a great, jatrged wound. Peter Mortensen. the contractor who paid young Hay the money Monday night, was arrested yesterday afternoon on suspicion of being connected with the murder. Mortensen. it is tated. gave the police their first information in regard to the location of the body. He denies all knowledge of the crime.

Y.. and was a witness against Ammon. The latter claimed to have been overpowered, but witnesses testified otherwise. Sentence has not yet been pronounced on Ammon.

Koiiiilit a Duel. Uniontown. Pa., Dec. 19. Daniel Bradburn and David Fagan fought a duel in a small room of Hall's boarding house where both men lived. Bradburn was killed and Fagan is i jail with a bullet wound in his side from the effects of which he may die. Fagan had accused Bradburn of stealing money from him. Mrs. Hall and Mrs. Addis, witnesse to the duel, did what they could to prevent it. Mrs. Hall was shot through the hand.

Dec. 19. treorge Ammon. formerly turnkey at the county jail here, was found guilty last night by a Jury in the United States court of permitting United States prisoners to escape from that institution. The prisoners were Joseph Ripley alias Topeka Joe. Tom Stewart and Joe Keegan. arrested for burglarizing the "VTest Toledo postoffice. David Morstate prisoner, also escaped fcut was recaptured at Rochester. N.

Canceled all K'liscas'empiits. Baltimore. Dec. 19. Prior to leaving his hotel to deliver a lecture at the Phoenix club in this city last night. Max O'Rell announced that he would cancel all further lectures and undergo an operation for appendicitis in New York in a few weeks. He said that If he survived the operation he would return immediately to Paris and did not expect to visit America again. Itesult of lst ! rtem. Chillicothe. O.. Dec. 19. Erne Ragland, her sons Charles and George, aged 21 and 12, and oaughter Cora, aged 20. all colored, were arrested here yesterday charged with the murder of Mrs. Charles Ragland. The woman died Monday night. Postmortem showed that the woman had been poisoned.

Stockholders of the Business Men's Building association filed suit yesterday afternoon against the Ohio Valley Trust company of this city, making grave charges. The latter is accused of watering its stock and making illegal transactions in the pretendej payment of capital stock. Also, that its stockholders are attempting to wreck the Business Men's Building association. Breach of trust and constructive fraud are also alleged, as well as tin fair methods and bookkeeping on the part of. the officers for the purpose of freezing out minority stockholders. The property involved will aggregate $500,000. which Includes two fine theaters here. The most prominent business men in the city are parties to the suit, being pitted against each other.

HI Motle Misunderstot d. Anderson, Ind., Dec. 19. The Southern Indiana eldership of the Church of God has vindicated the Rev. J. D. HagematP. pastor in this city. The minister sought to be peacemaker between husband and wife and his name became confused and his motive was misrepresented. Gold" inic -Vlulctetl. St. Joseph. Mich.. Dec. 19. Joseph Coveney was awarded a verdict in the circuit court here last night against Frank Phiscator. the Baroda gold king of the Yukon valley, in the sum of $7,500, because it was alleged that Phiscator alienated the affections of Coveney's wife. Coveney had previously obtained from Phiscator $9,500 and then followed Phiscator to the Klondyke and demanded $12,00 more. In the Yukon valley Coveney was put in Jail and forfeited $7,000 in gold dust to secure his freedom. The present suit was brought to recover the $7,000 and $300 interest.

Kitten By Mad Sow. Sullivan. Ind., Dec. 19. Harrison Burton, a farmer, six miles west of this city, was attacked by a mad sow and bitten in a horrible manner. Mr. Burton had been hunting, and after the animal had knocked him down and bit him several times, he secured his gun and placed toe muzzle against the sow's side. The end of the gun had become filled with snow, and when the gun was discharged the muzzle was torn away. Mr. Burton's wounds are of a very serious nature.

Canzbt at the rnssfns. Mishawaka, Ind, Dec. 19. Dr. "W. E. Bowman of Elkhart, surgeon for the Lake Shore and Michigan Southere railway company, and an unknown male companion, were struck by a fast mail train on that road last night and instantly killed. The accident occurred at the fatal Union crossing, where a farmer and wife were recently hurled into eternity.

The sensational damage snit which has occupied the attention of the court the past week, wherein Ellis Browning, a Wildcat township farmer, asked $25,000 damages against Lige Perry, county auditor, for the alienation of his la-year-old wife's affections, resulted in the Jury disagreeing.
