RICH3TOTST P AILY PALLADIUM, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 1901

Richmond Palladium he did not elaborate on this idea, but it is worthy of the closest consideration. For instance the tariff is no longer needed on oteel. Why not revise the tariff and reduce" duties on that item in consideration that other countries that ship steel here will reduce their tariffs against American breadstuff? That, it seems to me, is trood s u ri-1 sense, and I believe now is the time to act." GVfl THU I SDA , DEC. 19. 1901.. AMUSEMENTS.

In response to many requests from township trustees Attorney General Taylor has declared that under the law passed by the last legislature it is incumbent on all township trustees to prepare annual reports and have them published in a newspaper of general circulation in their respective counties before the 1st of January. The law is plain on the subject.

We print herewith the only on plete and correct description yet published of Richmond's new Panhandle passenger station. It will be seen that the new depot is to be something much more than ordinary for places the size of Richmond. The Pennsylvania company is at last doing the handsome thing by us, which is but another evidence that "all thiDgs come to those who wait."

If an unnecessary surplus is accumulating in the United States treasury, which seems to be the case, one of two methods should be adopted to reduce the the government's income. One is br cutting off some or all of the Spanish war internal revenue taxes. The other is by reducing the tariff on such articles as will safely bear a reduction, and by which re duction reciprocal advantages may be secured. It must be conceded that the latter plan has a distinct claim over the former on the ground that it wi!l affect a much larger class. A farther reduction of internal revenue tax, while it is desirable, would directly affect a comparatively small class, while a tariff reduction would reach the whole people. This is certainly a stroDg point in favor of tariff revision. Of course it is assumed that the revision would be made by the friends of the tariff principle.

(From the Gazette, Toowooraba, Australia.) I find Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is an excellent medicine. I have been suffering from a severe cough for the last two months, and it has effected a cure. I have great pleasure in recommending it. W. C. Wockner. This is the opinion of one of our oldest and most respected residents. and

The Washington correspondent of the Indianapolis Sentinel had an interview with Congressman Watson concerning his proposed speech on revision of tariff and reciprocity. In the course of the interview Mr. Watson sax J : "I am thoroughly wedded to the principle of the p'otectiye tariff, and I would not think of advocating anything that would tend to destroy that principle. At the same time I believe that tariff revision at this time not only would not do violence to the principle of true protec ion but would subserve and promote it.
