James K. Polk's Writings Will Fill Twenty-Sii 1 -a ViZf Volumns. Chicago. Dec. 19. The diaries, letters and manuscripts of James K. Polk comprising all his known writing have been purchased by the Chicago Historical society. The price paid Mrs. J. H. Fall of Nashville, Tenn.. stepdaughter of President Polk, was $3,500. When put into book form, as they soon will be. the manuscripts will fill 2( large volumes. The diary covers the period of his presidency, as does much of the miscellaneous matter, while the letters are the collection of a lifetime and were penned by the famous men of the period. All of the great statesmen of that time and many of the earlier presidents contributed to this collection, which alone will fill nine volumes.

Huntsville. Ala.. Dec. 19. After raiding a big illicit still in Jackson county Friday night and capturing Abe Cooper and Pope Burton. Deputy Marshal Wilds started for the nearest railroad station to take the two men to Huntsville. Since that time nothing has been heard from the officer. It is known Cooper escaped and revenue officials here are at a loss to account for the absence of Wilds and his other prisoner.' The route taken by the officer was through a section of the country where tne two prisoners were very popular.
