Claude Strader. aged 22 years, and Ed Blue, aged 24, coal miners, weie fatally burned yesterday afternoon by the explosion of a keg of powder which they were trying to open with a pick In the Harris & Langford mine, one mile west of this city. BIj-s'b eyes were burned out by the explosion and lac died last night. Strader lost an y. When the explosion occurred both men were hurled 20 feet away and their clothing had burned from their bodies before rescuers reached them. There is little hope for the recovery of Strader. A SEIlloCS CHAKGK May Yet fr'aee Officer ot Medical College. Indianapolis. Dec. 17. The police hava found no clue that will lead to the arrest of the ghouls who robbed tha grave of Edward Pedigo, whose body was found In a barrel in the Physio-Medical college Friday night. It is said that Pedigo's sons are being urged to file an affidavit against the officers of the college on the charge of receiving stolen goods. The statutes provide for punishment in the case of a stolen body, just as they do for receiving stolen goods of any kind. The penalty Is imprisonment from three to ten years. Fatal Kxplasion. Anderson. Ind., Dec. 17. The large two-story house of Monroe Selbert, five miles southwest of the city, was "wrecked by a natural gas explosion. Mrs. Seibert and her lS-year-old son Lorenzo were the only persons In the house at the time. Gas had collected on the second floor, and when the young man struck a match an explosion followed. He was hurled into the yard and fatally burned. His mother was only slightly burned. Fire followed the explosion. The loss Is $3,000, partially insured. Another r lobert Tragedy. Otterbein, Ind., Dec. 17. John Allen, aged 10. was shot and killed yesterday by his brother Benjamin, aged 19. The family were sitting about the kitchen Are. Ben having in Ma hand a Flobert rifle. The weapon wan accidentally discharged, the ball striking John in the bowels. He lived an hour after the tragedy. They are sons of Thomas Allen, a dairyman. Th-i brother is prostrated by the terrible . accident. - iMelil Again at Home. "Newcastle. Ind.. Dec. 17. Deputy "Warden Sam Dean brought John H. Diehl here from the prison north. Diehl gave a bond in the sum of $2,000 and was released, returning to hs home at Anderson. Henry Farwig of Richmond, father of Mary Farwig. was also here. The prison officials sent to the court an excellent report -of his conduct. It is the prevailing - opinion that Diehl will not be retried. Halt Have Settled. Peru. Ind.. Dec. 17. Of the 23 v'c'tims of the Wabash railroad wr?cK at Seneca. Mich., two weeks ago, brought to this city the day after the accident. , 15 of them are still at the Wabast Hallway Employees' hospital. About half of the Italians have settled wUh the railroad company and have gon to their destinations in the far West. The Deadly Cigarette. "Elkhart. Ind.. Dec. 17. Fred Hnggins. well known as an athlete, died suddenly here of excessive cigarette smoking. He had been addicted to the habit for years and frequently would arise in the night, take a handful of "coffin nails' and smoke all before returning to bed. ot Through With Him. Jasper. Ind., Dec. 17. Gardin-r Beebe. 60 years old. who whipped hffs wife, has been fined $25 and costs by Mayor Schwartz of Huntingburg. Court Kipiwaes It :ret. Bedford, Ind., Dec. 17. John IL Stewart was tried before the Lawrence circuit court yesterday on a charge of attempt to criminally assault his 16-year-old daughter. The Jury found him guilty, and Judge Martin sentenced him to the Michigan City prison for two to 14 years. Judge Martin expressed regret that the law did not give him the power to make the sentence more severe. Fled In the Snow. Logansport, Ind., Dec. 17. Fir destroyed the farm residence of William Peterson.- near here. Peterson and wife and three children barely escaiv ed with their lives. Barefooted and li their nightclothes, they were compelled to walk through the snow a mile to the home of a neighbor. Mercury was below zero. All are badly frozen. Nuked Knife m.idtt Paoll, Ind.. Dec. 17. Charles Haley. 17 years old. while running with a knife blade in his pocket, slipped am: fell, and the blade was forced into Ms abdomen, to his serious injury. Itosebery'a Keynote. Chesterfield, Dec. 17. Lord Rosebery's long expected and much-heralded speech delivered here last night received with marked enthusiasm by an immense crowd. It can hardly be said to have thrown much light along the pathway of the Liberal party. That the speech was a finished oratorical effort was amply testified by the frequent applause with which the speaker was interrupted. But it is doubtful when he had finished if his most admiring listener could have given any justification for his enthusiasm, save that it was Lord Rosebery. Resolved into its elements, the speech merely said: "Get together." Hobson In Cupid's Snare. Springfield. O., Dec. 17. Capt. Richmond P. Hobson of Merrimac fame has succumbed to the wiles of Cupid and his engagement was announced last evening to Miss Eleanor Ludlow, one of the most beautiful young women in Springfield. Captain Hobson attended the opening of the new Y. M. C. A. building in this city last fall and while here met Miss Ludlow, pwho was one of the company having charge of the arrangements tor the opening. Miss Ludlow Is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ludlow and is a niece of former Governor Asa Bushnel.1. The wedding will take place in February. Boy's Itevolting Crime. Athens. Ga.. Dec. 17. Leila Lambert, an 8-year-old child, was burned to death in her home last night by an unknown young negro boy whom she had allowed to enter the house to get warm, during the absence of her parents. When he started to leave, he picked up a piece of paper, stuck it in the fire, placed the burning paper tinder the dress of the little girl, and escaped from the house. The child attempted to extinguish the flames, but was unsuccessful. The police are making every effort to find the negro. c; roii iid to li ce. Pittsburg, tkc. 17. Mrs. J. Glover and Mrs. Jessie Powell, both prominent in church end social circles of Rosslyn HeiRhts. were literally ground to pieces last night. They were returning from a literary tea at the ho'ise of Mrs. Dr. Husler and just in front of their homes they stood on the westbound tracks of the Pan-Handle railroad to let a heavy coal train pass east. A light engine going west struck them, throwing them under the coal train. Their bodies were horribly mangled. Cant. Tilley Upturns. San Francisco. Dec. 17. Captain B. F. Tilley, U. S. N., ex-governor of Tutuila. Samoa, arrived here yesterday on the steamer Sonoma, accompanle by his wife. He will proceed to Was'. Ington, traveling by the souther route. Captain Tilley expressed hi. gratification that the judgment of th eminent officers who considered thi charges against him in Samoa was in every respect a complete vindication. Logansport, Ind.. Dec. 17. Frank Hardy and daughter w?re instantly killed yesterday by a southbound Vandalia passenger train at the North side crossing. Hardy was bringing the girl to town, where she is a high school student. They had the side curtains on the buggy , and were Wndled up on account of the cold. The train was past clue and njnnic? rapidly. Tha horse was killed and thrown aside. The buggy became fastened on the pilot and was carried for 300 yards, wirh Hardy and the girl In it.
